There is a variety of birth control methods that protect against unexpected pregnancy. However, if a woman wants a permanent birth control , there is only one choice -- tubal ligation. It is very suitable for couples, who for some reason are not planning to have more children. Permanent female sterilization is a safe, effective and permanent method of birth control. Therefore, it is vital to consider all the pros and cons before the procedure, since tubal ligation reversal is possible but very expensive, complicated, and has a relatively low rate of success.
What is it?
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure during which the fallopian tubes are cut and sealed in order to make it impossible for the egg to travel down from the tubes to the uterus. It also stops sperm from entering the uterus and the egg and sperm cannot meet each other, hence, fertilization cannot happen. It is a female sterilization method and permanent mean of contraception .
This surgical procedure is highly effective immediately and has the efficiency rate in contraception of 99.5%.
How it works
Each ovary produces an egg every second month. The fallopian tubes carry this egg from the ovaries to the uterus every month and, if it meets sperm, a woman is able to conceive. During tubal ligation each of the fallopian tubes is cut and sealed with rings, bands, clips, or seared with a caustic. An egg then cannot reach the uterus and sperm is prevented from reaching an egg, and hence fertilization cannot occur.
Tubal ligation is a minor surgical procedure that is usually performed in an inpatient or outpatient department. If a woman is suitable for the procedure, it can be performed when a patient is sure that she is not pregnant. Female fertilization can be performed under general or local anesthesia.
Most of tubal ligation procedures are performed through endoscopic surgery. This allows a minimally invasive intervention and takes a shorter time to recover afterwards. It involves a small incision close to the navel through which a thin endoscopic camera is inserted. Another incision is made above the pubic hairline through which a surgical endoscopic instrument, that can cut and seal the tubes, is inserted. It takes about half an hour for the surgery to be complete.
A patient is advised to take two or three days off. She is also recommended reduce physical activities and exercise for more than a week. Sexual activities are allowed once a woman feels comfortable, generally, after a week. If surgery was performed through vagina, a patient is told not to insert anything into the vagina for at least two weeks in order to avoid infection.
Some women decide to have tubal ligation performed straight after pregnancy and childbirth. It is very convenient, since a woman is already in the hospital and this procedure does not prolong hospital stay after childbirth. If a woman has a Caesarean section performed, it is very easy for a gynecologist to cut the fallopian tubes through the same procedure.
Therefore if you decide to be sterilized after pregnancy, talk to your doctor and inform him/her about your decision prior to the childbirth.
Cost of tubal ligation
The cost of tubal ligation usually ranges from $1,200 to $6,000. It depends very much upon the state, region and private clinic. Some insurance providers cover at least part of the surgery cost, therefore, you should check with your insurance for more information.
Hello ladies, I just had a TL and I am now a little nervous. My doctors told my they where going to cut and tie but then decided to clap. Has anyone else had the clamps and if so any feedback? I didn't have to many opitions with my decision to get the T.L. I have a clotting disorders and almost died my first child with a Pulmony Embolism and the last child I developed a dvt. I am very high risk. So I just wanted tohave make a comment to the lady that stated their are people that are waiting for adoptions and making it sound like people are selfish for doing this. I just have to say how selfish it is of someone else to tell someone to take a chance of their live to give live for someone else. What about my children that might not have a mother after taking that chance!!!. Before juding you should stay off this site and keep your comments to yourself.!! This is for support!!not judgement!!

I am a mother of 3 girls, I am 27 and I had my tubes burnt when my now 2 year old was born. I haven't gotten pregnant, and I am not sick like some of these women on here. The only thing for me is when I do have my menstral cycle the cramping is far worse and the bleeding is far worse. But to me it is worth it not having to worry about getting pregnant. I have heard this does occur, but your chances are very slim. I am blessed to have my 3 girls. Do what you think is right and make sure you are 100% positive you do not want more children, especially make sure the DR. knows what he/she is doing. Good luck ladies

I am 24 yrs old and I just had my tubes burned a month ago the only bad thing was that with my first period I started to cramp really bad and my husband had to take me to the ER because I was bleeding a lot. I have no regrets because the reason why I decided to get this procedure is because of my 3 yr old son he is Autistic and he got diagnosed when I was a month pregnant with my lil baby girl. I am very happy with my two kids and I just didn't want to run the chance of having another child with Autism

Ladies, I am sorry about your ill feelings toward the TL process. Please take a step back and at the time it was a good idea, but now that your life has changed you think it was a bad idea. We all make bad decisions (it was not a mistake) but it is how we grow and learn from them. There are other alternatives that you have to consider now like a surrogate or adopting. Their are too many children in the system that want to be loved by someone that wants to give them love. Why not check into it. Everyone can come out on top. It may not have been a choice before the TL, but it can be a choice after the TL.
I am 37 years young and have 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl, I feel the TL was a good decision. If my husband and I was to split and I get with someone else later, I would hope that he would understand why I made the decision at the time and will love me for me.
Please give adoption a chance. Peace and blessings Crystal

I had my tubes tied in july of 06' and scince then i have had irregular periods even bleeding twice in one month. Its already the 20th of this month and i have not recieved my period for this month. I do regret tying my tubes. What about you all?
Guest 2007-03-15 19:34:01
Please really consider this procedure. I am 30 yrs old and had the procedure done almost 8 yrs ago. I thought the same as most other woman that I was going to be with my husband forever, we wanted to give our daughters everything so we thought that TL was the way to go. Well it was up untill the marriage ended and the side effects started occuring. I would not recommend getting a tubal ligation not even to my wordt enemy. i now have remarried and now we want to have a child. I will be seeing a fertility specialist and viewing my options within this next month. I think if you dont want anymore children then I think maybe there is other forms of birth control because you can never be to sure. I hope that this helps someone.

Guest 2007-01-16 01:06:40
I am contemplating having a tubal litigation. I am 30, I really don't want any more kids, I have 2 already (boy and girl). I am seriously just a little nervous, are there really many side effects after having this surgery. I keep trying to convince my husband that its easier if he would just get it done. I asked my doctor about Mirena, but she did not seem to like that birth control method. What would be the method that woudl last the longest other then the patch/or pill.
Guest 2007-01-12 01:12:44
Hi, I have been researching a tubal reversal for about two years. Well I have found one and it is in Mexico and I will be going at the end of this month the cost is 2665

Guest 2007-01-04 22:00:36
I had two children as a teenager and asked th edr about getting a TL...he said no go ..I was only 20. After my son was born 11 yrs later, I decided to get it done. I am glad I did...no more BC pills, dealing with the PTLS sucks but its worth it.

My name is Amanda.

ladies... DON'T DO IT! TUBAL LITIGATION IS A DECISION YOU WILL REGRET LATER IN LIFE!!!! when I was 23 I had a complicated pregnancy ( 3rd son) My mother insisted I proceed with the surgery and she convinced my doctor to talk me into the surgery- even as far as to say another child would kill me during delivery. Since then, I have had a serious car accident which left me partially paralyzed, my husband divorced me when I was in a coma( 10 years ago) I am now remarried, my religion has changed, my culture has completely changed and I can not bear my husbands child and I feel incomplete. My 3 sons were taken away from me by my family after my accident and with the inability to bear more children, I am just a mother without a child, my husband a father without a child. We have so much love to give to children and would love nothing more than to concieve, but because of the pressure from my mother and the doctor 13 years ago, I am unble. This is not the future I had planned. I mean, when I had TL I thought I will be married to my first husband always and we had children so it was acceptable( even though I, myself did not want that and my husband had no opinion- he was content either way) I never expected my religon and culture will change or that I would be hurt so badly and lose my children. I never ever thought it would become this difficult. Before deciding to go through with permanant sterilization, consider those things. What if your religion changes and ivf is no longer an option? What if you marry inter-culture and him and his family desire children for cultural reasons? What if you lose the children you have and can not ever be a mother again? think on all of these things because it CAN happen, to anyone, anytime. TUBAL LITIGATION WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!! Just don't do it...

I am 30 years old my tubes were burned when I was 21. Now I am 30 years old and i am three weeks late on my cycle. I took a preganacy test and it was negative a week ago. I am just wondering what is going on. I have no insurance and I am worried. Is it possible that I am pregnant?
Guest 2006-10-03 14:44:02
hello i'm 38 yrs old and i had the procedure done at the age of 33...when my youngest was a year old..i have 3 boys and definitely didnt want anymore..the doctor i had didnt do tying..but cut and burned the tubes..and so far..so good..i love it..my periods were heavier for a about a yr afterwards but have since lighten up a lot and even the days are only about 3..so i say go ahead if its really what you want..but just make sure its the right decision for you.. i had mine done because i have high blood pressure and taking birth control was not a good option for me..

My friend, who has 3 children, had a tubal ligation done in Feb. Now she is suffering horribly. She can't sleep, she is fatigued all the time, depressed, and suffers from "flooding" periods that last up to three weeks. She is nauseated all the time and literally, cannot get up off the sofa for days. Two weeks ago, she went through 2 boxes of tampons in 4 days. The doctor that performed the surgery had his licensed revoked in New York and North Carolina. Another patient of his here in Oklahoma, also had a surgical "mis-hap" and he has since fled the state and is now practicing medicine in the state of New Mexico. My friend is only 28 years old. If you are thinking about have a tubal ligation done, check out the physician's credentials first, and secondly, you might try another form of birth control, as taking a pill every day sure beats living with PTLS like my friend. I will never consider a tubal ligation after I have seen the hell my friend is living through.

I am 33 years old and I have 2 children. I had a tl done when i was 22 years old. i often wish i would have waited. I recently got a report on a x-ray done, not related. but the radiologist find surgical clips in my rt side. Now i am wondering if it is the clip the doctor used to tie my tubes or did he leave something behind. Need help, need info.

I am a 30 year old who has 3 kids. I had a tubal ligation done and it was the worst mistake i could have made. They never told me of the side effects of having this procedure done. I highly recommend you NOT having the procedure. Do some research on PTLS (post tubal ligation syndrome) and tell me if you want all those problems. I have been sick for a long time now and will be having a reversal done with an alternate for birth control later this summer. I hope this helped anyone who was considering this. Be careful in making your choices and do all the research before its too late

I am 20 yrs old and have 2 children a girl thats 2 yrs old and a boy thats 1yr old. I have been with my husband since Im 15 and we have always planned to have only 2 kids. Now because of my age I cant find a docter to do my operation!! I am posotive I want 2 kids only and so dose my husband. Does anyone know of a docter that will operate in Orlando Florida???
Guest 2006-03-14 22:28:16
i am 21 and have one child. She is 2 1/2 and i know that one child is definetly enough. I found a dr in michigan that is willing to do the operation even though i am 21 and only have one child. I do not think that it is a legal thing it is more of a moral thing for dr's. I told the dr' that if i wanted to i could have ten abortions and nobody would bat an eyelash but to get a tubal ligation is like pulling teeth. And Ladybird yes you can get pregnant after a tubal ligation my mother had her tubes cut, tied, clamped, and burned now i have an eleven year old brother. She never had a child after that though.

For the chart, An average price of tubal ligation, in the article above, are those estimates before or after insurance? No
Is it possible to get pregnant despite having had a tubal ligation? Yes, it's possible to get pregnant after having tubal ligation. But very often it's ectopic pregnancy..

Is it possible to get pregnant despite having had a tubal ligation? I have hear of women getting pregnant after the procedure.
Guest 2006-03-04 01:44:08
I am 27 years of age with two kids ages 6 and 7. However, I had the tubal ligation procedure done when I was only 22. At first. the doctor did not want to perform the operation but after so many interviews and discussions I stould my ground and became very adament as to what I wanted done and would not take no for an answer. Finally, he agreed and medicaid paid for it. I must say it was a very easy procedure and I haven't had any problems since. After the procedure was paid for by medicaid I discontinued medicaid and got a federal job with insurance benefits that I know would not have covered the cost. I was Lucky!!
Guest 2006-03-03 01:14:09
I am 35 and just had this procedure done on 2/24/06. It was so easy. I could have gone back to work the next day but my boss would not let me. I did not take anything stronger than a 800 mg ibuprophen. I went out the next night!
Guest 2006-03-01 22:54:06
I'm 42 and have a baby now and am pretty sure I don't want any more kids (how does anyone have the energy for more than one child?!). My sig other won't consider a vasectomy, so I get to deal with this all on my own (can you tell I'm annoyed?). I'm not a fan of having my abdomen blown up with air, for the procedure - otherwise I think I could do it. I keep stalling though. I thought being in my 40s would minimize my fertility, but life throws you an unexpected curve ball once in a while.
Guest 2006-02-27 02:47:54
We'll I have 5 children and I was married for 9 years. Now I am divorced and have a new husband and he does not have children and he want's one. My tubes are tied and I regret doing it because it is always and issue that comes up with him. Now I'm looking into getting it reversed but it's so expensive but I would advise you that if you do it do it because you want to and not for anybody else.

At 20 yrs. old I had my daughter and wanted a tubal ligation. My Dr. at the time refused saying I would want more children and made me wait until I was 23. I knew at 20 I wanted no more children. I am now 40 and don't regret it for a minute. My daughter is a mother of 1 and wants no more children but is being refused also due to age. Is there a legality issue to this or is this just an ethical/moral issue with the Dr.s? Any info on this would be appreciated.

BEFORE ANY OF YOU THINK OF HAVING THIS SURGERY DONE YOU SHOULD RESEARCH THE MATTER? I WISH I WOULD HAVE LISTEN TO MY DOCTOR AND TOOK ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE. I'M NOW SUFFERING FROM A SYNDROME CALLED POST TUBAL LITIGATION SYNDROME. ALL I CAN ADVISE IS TO LOOK FURTHER INTO THE MATTER

I'm seriously thinking about getting this procedure done, or rather, seriously want it done... But I seem to have a problem?... A lot of doctors and clinics I have spoken to seem to reject and ignore my convictions to be sterilized because of my age (26), and the fact that I don't have kids yet (Ummm... I thought sterilization was intended to prevent having to have them?). Does anybody know of a good doctor that can and will do this procedure under those "circumstances"? I don't care if the doctor wants to do a 2 hour talk-fest beforehand to go over the whos and whats as he/she sees it - Or to see if I'm serious. I just want to get it scheduled and get on with my life. Anyhowdy, thanks for your time -ShaiGurl
