ParaGard T 380A is a T-shaped intrauterine device that contains copper and is used in birth control . It is a non-hormonal method of female contraception. It is about 3 cm long and is produced of both copper and plastic. Tiny thread is added to the device, which helps on removal of this type of IUD.
Only doctors should insert Paragard IUD into the uterus. This device is effective in birth control straight after its insertion into the uterus. Since it can be left without removal for up to ten years, the price of the device is quite high, fluctuating from $400 to $500 in the United States of America. Paragard IUD is an effective, non-hormonal, long lasting and reversible form of birth control available now.
The action of this device as a method of birth control is not entirely known. Since it does not contain any hormones, copper IUD does not affect ovulation. Paragard IUD is known to kill sperm due to antispermicide effects of copper. This device also changes the uterine lining so that it becomes thinner, and hence, uterine cavity becomes more hostile for sperm and unavailable for implantation of an egg. It also acts as a stimulating agent for prostaglandins that inhibit production of certain hormones needed to assist pregnancy.
The efficiency of Paragard IUD
The efficiency of Paragard IUD is considered to be high, reaching about 90%. Some claim that failure rate is 1% for users, who are comfortable with this type of IUD. However, clinical studies have shown that the possibility that this device falls out the uterus during the first year of use is 5%. And even though, Paragard IUD may be left inside for up to ten years, many women stops using it sooner due to side effects.
This type of intrauterine device is a reversible form of contraception. Women are able to conceive right after removal of IUD.
Should a woman become pregnant with Paragard in place, the device should be removed to prevent possible complications of pregnancy. Removal of an intrauterine device may be sometimes complicated leading to miscarriage or even surgical abortion. If IUD is not removed, long-term effects to fetus are not yet known.
Am I suitable for copper IUD?
Not every woman is suitable for using this form of birth control. First, a woman should have had at least one pregnancy before inserting the device. Her uterus should be normal in shape. Post-pregnancy or post-abortion intrauterine infection during the past 3 months is a contraindication for this method of contraception. It is strictly not recommended to insert an IUD if a woman has a history of previous acute Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Other contraindications are uterine or cervical cancer, Wilson’s disease or allergy to any of the components of the device, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, and cervical infection.
A woman should consult her health care professional to find out whether she is suitable or not for having Paragard IUD. Women should also know that this device does not protect against any sexually transmitted diseases, therefore additional measures should be used for that.
Paragard IUD side effects
Like all method of birth control, Paragard IUD has certain side effects and possible complications that women should be aware of. The most common side effects include longer and heavier menstruation for several months after insertion. In addition, women also experience spotting. These side effects usually disappear in several months after beginning of use. But a woman should contact a doctor in case of severe menstrual bleeding or if she misses a period, since it might be due to pregnancy.
One of the most serious complications associated with the use of an IUD is perforation of the uterus. Luckily, it is a very rare case. Expulsion of the device is rather frequent and is more likely to appear in younger patients. Pelvic inflammatory disease is also a possible complication due to Paragard, like other IUD’s. Other complications include backache, vaginal discharge, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or even infertility . If any complaints occur a woman should contact her doctor immediately in order to avoid these complications.
Even though there are possible side effects and complications associated with this device, and it efficiency in birth control is not as high compared to hormonal methods of birth control, Paragard IUD is probably one of the most popular non-hormonal methods of contraception these days.

Hi everyone, I am not only new to this site but new to posting on discussion boards! Question- I have a Copper-T Paragard and will be getting it removed in about a month. Does anyone know how long it takes to get pregnant afterwards? I have heard that I should wait a little while to rid my body of copper to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Thoughts?

Hello Ladies... just wanted to comment on some of what you ladies wrote... Its normal to miss your period while you are on IUD IF you have the hormonal one. (mirena, etc) I believe that you should get your period on the copper one and a side effect is a much more heavier period with strong cramps. For any one who is concern about getting pregnant after getting it removed, unless you had complications while on the IUD (pellvic infection) you CAN get pregnant. I had the Mirena on and took it out. I started to try to get pregnant on April and on May found out I was pregnant. I now have a 5 months old baby. Ofcourse I started trying 2 months after I removed it.. you need to let your body adjust just like when you got it in. I now have the copper IUD. The copper IUD doesnt contain any hormones so there shouldnt be any hormonal change.. I've had it for 1.5 week and only had cramps the 1st day.. the ONLY thing that I'm not liking its all the discharge that comes with it. I read on webMD that the copper IUD makes your uterus produce fluid that kills sperm. The fluid consist of white cells, copper ions and something else... so the more intercourse your have the more discharge...

Hey all. Step-sister had Alyssa in January this week found out she's pregnant and had to have paragard removed. Big scare and hopes she carries to term. No one expected this or knew what to say. Being so close to giving birth.

Hello. I just recently had my IUD put in about 2 months ago. I'm 18 and have been with my boyfriend for a year now but I don't want any accidents and I didn't want my mon to find out I was on some form of birth control so I got the IUD. I'm about four days late and I have had some spotting and cramping but then it all goes away. I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative but I'm not sure what to do. Help please!

Hello, I had my IUD taken out on Dec. 23, 2011. And, it was confirmed yesterday that i was pregnant and my due date is Nov. 5, 2011. I also had spotting on the 16th of Feb. which the doctor thinks was either due to the IUD removal or implantation. Good luck to all of you trying to conceive, i have my fingers crossed for you. ~ Sincerely

Hello Ladies, This is my first time posting. I have had the ParaGard for around 2years. Prior to this One was removed because it was falling out. However, since the new has been in place less I have been ok up until a month ago. I have been having lower abdominal cramping and bloating. I missed this period but have a feeling I am not Prego. I want to remove it so that I can start planning my third child I have 2 girls from a previous marriage. But I see that for many of you it's not easy getting PG after the IUD. If you have had trouble how long did it take you to conceive?

Ok ladies, I need some advice.I got the paragard nearly two years ago after my second child.I have problems with hormones in birth control, so I figured that'd be my best option. Sadly it has given my longer more irregular periods. My cramps are killer I never really had them until i got on birth contorl or when im using a tampon. They come the week before my period and last another week after. I have heavy bleeding. Its not nearly as bad as the first year but its still a lot heavier than I'm accustomed to. I get a very annoying pain in my left ovary near the week of my period. Sometimes I just lay down all day bc it hurts to move. Lately its just been off and on daily. Some positions during sex hurts like crazy so I lose interest. Recently my husband and I found out that he can push the thing. I ended up in the fetal position due to the pain. Lastly the strings poke and leaves marks on him... Does anyone else have these problems? If so please let me know. Or do yall think I should just throw in the towel with this thing? Thanks Dee

But, all the women in my family are fertile mertyls so hopefully *fingers-crossed* I'm the same way! Hope everyones doing great!!

UPDATE! I got my IUD removed Oct 22. Got my period Nov 10th and was supposed to get my period on Dec 8th but didn't. Took a pregnancy yesterday and it came back inconclusive. 2 lines but one was really light. So I took another one today and it was definitely positive!! As clear as day! It is very possible to get pregnant immediately after IUD removal! I am so happy and I wish all you luck! Baby dust all around ♥ -Christabelle

Hi everyone, I am a nurse on night shift so I had a little free time on my hands. I just had my IUD removed 11/19/10. I am a little concerned about how long it could take to get pregnant so I was interested in this forum when I seen it. It's nice if you don't want to tell your family yet. This way you have someone to talk to. I didn't have periods while I had the IUD and I just had one 11/21/10, @ days after removal so we will see. Is it safe to start trying now or should we wait a while?

Hey ladies! I'm new to this site. I'm 23 and I have a 3 year old son and he is amazing! But now I want to try for another one (a girl would be great!) Anyway, I've had the paragard (copper IUD) for a little over 2 years and have had many complications. Severe cramps, mood swings, heavy bleeding (especially in the beginning) but it served its purpose and for that I am grateful. I removed my IUD on Oct 22 and bled after for a day or so. I was supposed to come on my period yesterday. Have never missed a period EVER except when I became pregnant with my son. I know the exact day I'm supposed to come on because I get tender breast and minor cramping and I usually come on the next day after. I hear you can get pregnant almost immediately after removal so I'm not sure if that's why no period or maybe it's normal to not have one directly after removal, especially since it was so close by. I'm really excited about possible being pregnant though, but I am also a little scared because what if I am unable to conceive!!?? I'll keep you all posted. If I don't come on my period today, I'm going to get an hpt. Wish me luck! ♥Christabelle

@alishea001 The same thing happened to me. I had my Iud removed on the 10th of sep. Before I had it my periods were like 7 days. While I had it they were like 4 to 5 days. Now it is down to like 2 to 3 days. I assume it is because I'm older since I had it in like 4 years and because it was just in there.

I have had my IUD for 3 years now. I am unable to use any hormonal birth control due to severe allergic reactions. I have had so many complications thus far. My periods have yet to lighten up and have caused me to become anemic. On top of that, I have recurring infections. It's like clockwork, I have my period for 7 days, and one week later I have a full blown infection until I get my period again. I have been taking OTC pills to help with my Ph but nothing seems to help. I've had two partners since the insertion, both monogomous relationships and am STD free. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem with the recurring infections? I'm at the end of my wits here and don't know what to do considering my low options of contraceptives. Please feel free to email me your similar story or any advice you may have.

I had the paragard for 3 1/2 years. I had it removed on Sep 10th to try again. I have nothing but positives to say about it. I could have more positives though because I have the best doctor for 5 years. I also have a high tolerance for pain. The insertion didn't hurt at all. It was over before I could even write my whole name. I did have it removed my hysteroscopy because my strings slipped into my uterus. Even it didn't hurt. Just a few pinches do to the local they gave me. It was removed in like 5-10 minutes. I didn't have a heavy period. It actually shorted my period from 6 to 4 days. I loved loved loved it. I would get it again after this go round but this will be my fourth so I want the essure for a permanent option.

Hello ladies I have been on the paragard for 5mths now and my daughter is 6mths me and my husband r not really planning to have anymore childeren at all becuse our daughter was very hard to conceive and I was very very sick So i thought this was the perfect option for me. When i first got it, it was painful a lil the insertion but afterwards didnt feel anything when i have my cycle I have bad cramps but not horrible and heavy bleeding for about 2days, but other than that I love it. Recently I have had some spotting and no period and negative pregnancy test anybody else had this problem?
bjsmomma27 2010-08-11 20:14:11
I have had my paraguard IUD in for about 15 months and within the past three months i started having strange symptoms like spottig in between periods, bad cramping, ( kinda like urinary tract infection symptoms) and also bloating to the point that it looks like im pregnant sometimes! i just went to the doctor and she says that cramping, bloating and spotting are common side effects, but it concerns her that i didnt have these symptoms before and that i do now. she is concerned that my body is trying to push the IUD out. but with a vaginal exam she said it looks to be in the right place. has anyone else had it in for a while with no problems and then started having side effects? overall i love the paraguard because i dont have the extreme side effects that i get when i was on a hormonal birth control.
And one more comment... mostly all women with paraguard have already had a child so im shocked to see all of the comments about how painful the insertion was .....if you ask me anyone who has been through childbirth should be able to handle the IUD insertion without complaining! to me the insertion was uncomfortable and painful but really no problem at all.. i have felt much worse pain before!

I just had my iud inserted about 2 weeks ago, 6 weeks after I had my daughter on May 26th,2010. My husband and I want more children in the future but we dont know when so I thought the paragard was a good choice. I'm really nervous now after reading all of these scary comments. I had the Mirena after we had our 1st daughter. I loved it. I didnt have a period or cramps or anything for the 2 and half yrs that I had it in. I also got pregnant 1 wk after having it removed. Would someone please tell me something good about the Paragard so that I can stop freakin out?
alysrenae 2010-07-31 06:54:16
Hey guys! I've found everyone's comments very interesting!! So, I have had my copper IUD now for 6 years ( I know that it is complete craziness to wait this long between having another child). My husband and myself thought we were done having children after having our daughter and son, we were satisfied; however, we decided this last year that we would like to add onto our family. I am very nervous to get my IUD removed (pain, irregulary menstruation cycles etc..). Upon reading previous posts, it seems to me that it takes quite a while to conceive after removing it. I guess I am just trying to way out whether or not it is a good idea to get it removed or not... being that I don't want a huge gap between the children. Has anyone had good luck conceiving afterwards?nullI know that it is complete craziness to wait this long between having another child

I got my IUD put in in July 2008 and recently had it taken back out. I did bleed heavy and I had intense cramps during my period. But it says its because it irritates you. So, I think you all should be okay. The periods do eventually slightly lighten but they will remain heavier than they were before. Yes my cramps were alot more intense. Its not laced with the hormones like in the other one. So just let it ride. I didnt have any bad experiences. Good luck to you all.

Hi everyone. I just had my Paragard put in last Friday. I have 6 children the last one born 05/23/2010 and we decided this was a good option. I was already 4 days into my menstrual cycle when I had it put in and it is now 7 days later after my period started and I am still bleeding full strength. Has anyone else had this happen and when did it stop? I am considering getting it removed if the bleeding doesn't stop or slow down in another 2 weeks as I do not want to be on an endless period. Thanks for your help.

Hello everyone! Thought I'd share my story with the copper iud as well. I had mine removed on April 7th the last day of my menstrual cycle after 8 years of having it. May 7th came and no period, I took several pregnancy tests from May 7th through May 29th and all said negative yet I had many pregnancy symptoms. During this time I felt like I was going to start and nothing came, I was getting frustrated at not knowing what was going on with me so I went for a blood test which came back positive on May 30th, the following day I went to a pregnancy clinic and the test finally had a faint line indicating positive so I was referred to a gyn. He had me at 8 wks according to my last menstrual cycle and when he did the transvaginal ultrasound nothing showed up!! I was in awwww!!! So he sent me to get some lab work and my hcg levels were at 480 indicating I was early in pregnancy and he somehow ruled out an ectopic pregnancy.Anyway He scheduled me for July 21st. I hate not knowing how far along I am.. !!

Hi everyone, i have had my copper IUD for almost 4yrs now during the 4 yrs i have been consistentnever late and on a 28-32 day cycle. I got my IUD removed because my husband and i are ttc. removed on May 13 my period was due on may 23 or withion 3 days of May 23. The doctor told me that i would experience some cramping and spotting immediately after. got the spotting for a day if that, no cramps. all of last week i had cramps (May 23 to May 27) but no period. I have spotted one or twice in the last 2 days no period. I have tested several times and the test are negativ still no period. I am now about 8 days late and no signs of my period in sight. My breasts are NOT tender, i have been peeing a little more than normal but not excessively more... oh and my husband and i have newly wed fun quite often. could i be preggy?
lashanda 2010-05-18 10:11:44
hello every body my name is lashanda and i had the paragard for about three weeks and been in so much pain is that normal. also how long will these cramps last i never had cramps before.
heidihu 2010-05-12 01:07:39
Hi everyone, I have had mine about a month now and for the people who are having cramping use Advil (not Tylenol or anything else) Advil reduces inflamation and will help with the cramps. I also heard Evening Primrose is good, but I haven't needed it. For me the most uncomfortable was the insertion, and heavy frequent periods since getting it. My Dr. Says that should get better...
Quick question, did anyone else start feeling irritable or a little depressed after getting their Paragard?
sandra2 2010-05-03 16:24:48
HI, i had my IUD put in november, 2008. Now for the past couple weeks i keep having pains in my lower abdomen, and sometimes in the top. I'm not sure if its my IUD or not, but i feel that it might be. Also while my husband and i are having intercourse, if we really get into it and he goes deep inside, we have to slow down because it hurts. I have not been to the dr yet because i have no insurance or anything, so i have been debating on going to ER. If anyone might could give some advice, please e-mail me, thank you.

Hello All, I am 23 years old and just had my paraguard iud placed this past Monday. I will tell you the cramping (for me) was extreme followed by horrible lower back pain, migraines and I have been spotting (now full on bleeding) ever sense. However this is not to deter anyone from getting Paraguard all birth control methods have side effects some more mental some more physical but when you weigh that against unplanned pregnancy the answer is clear. I have tried other forms of bc methods in the past but as of a year ago I was diagnosed with Psudo Tumor Cerebri and Paraguard is now my only option due to the no hormones factor. I had the Mirena IUD before my diagnosis and found the side effects to be similar with less bleeding after insertion and no periods. My periods are already irregular and painful so cramping is old news to me. I am very hopeful that this method is effective and complication free. If anyone has any suggestions for easing the cramping/lower back pain/ headache please send them my way. Also since I had my new 10 year plan inserted I have been able to feel the strings at random moments has this happened to anyone else?

I had the copper IUD for 8 yrs with no problems at all from it. I had it removed so that my husband and I could try to have another baby. Well lets just say life happened and we split up so I went back to have the copper IUD put back in. I dont remember it being so painful the first time I had it put in and this time its been 4 days and Im still bleeding from it. Is this normal can anyone help me? Like I said the first time I had it put in I had no problems.

Ive had the IUD since December 09. Ive been doing research since feb 09 when i ultimatly decided that i did not want anymore children. I was on the pill for about a year and hated it, i would forget and always had pregnancy scares. Inseration was no where near as bad as I read. It felt like mild mentral cramps. I do experience cramping before my period and i have very heavy bleeding for about 3-4 days. I can only use super tampons only. But i was say when its gone its gone. My Doctor says that the bleeding with slow down we will see. I dont have any complaints becasue everything that has happened i have read that it may be.

i just recently had paragard inserted in january after my 1st miscarriage.. its been about tow months now, and my 1st period was horrible.. servere cramping, and it lasted for about 8 days. its february and now im having lower abdominal pain.. it hurts even when i sit down.. my doctor says that my string is still in tact, but idk.. i know my body, and this doesn't feel right... im thinking about getting it removed, but i wanted to know if someone has experienced this before?
momov7 2010-02-13 01:08:34
I got my paraguard after maving my 2nd miscarriage in March 2009. I have 7 kids and my husband and I are not sure we are ready to do the whole tied tubes things so this was a great option for us. But I have experienced the vaginal dryness and not being able to stay moist during sex. My husband even told me he felt the IUD the first time we had sex after I had it put in(we dont have that problem anymore). But I am having another issue now....I cannot control my Bladder. As soon as I feel like I have to pee, it is coming. It is a real pain when traveling or even just at home, having to run to the bathroom and do the "pee pee" dance as my kids call it, just so I dont wet myself.
Is anyone else having this problem? Feel free to email me at

I have had my IUD since october 0f 2006, I love it. I have pain sometimes but nothing major. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I am a mother of two, I dont want any more for now. The best choice you can make, There are side affects but nothing major and everything in life has side effects.you will get over it.
swtgeorgiapeach 2010-01-23 07:14:13
Lindsayhope, I totally agree with you. When you are considering getting an IUD, you need to ask as many question as you can. I just got the IUD put in Jan 20, it has been 2 days. I have experienced some cramping the first 2 day, and some spotting. I would rather deal with a little cramping, than child birth. I am 34 years old, and have 3 children ( 16, 11, 10). I have tried so many different birth control methods, I have tried the pill (forgot to take them), the patch ( migraines) , the ring (migraines) , and the ultimate tubes tied (useless). After getting my tubes tied, I got pregnant. Imagine my shock. So now I am trying the Paragard. Hopefully, this method will work for me. Like I said before, I have only have little cramps, and some spotting. I will definetly keep you guys posted.

To stephni when I had my IUD removed it was not embedded so I don't know if this helps. But I took extra strength asprin an hour or so before my visit. It was very little pain it was more uncomfortable than anything. It took like a second to remove and I was on my was. The next couple of days I bleed with some cramping but nothin major. If your not planning to conceive be careful because we got pregnant about 2 weeks later! I hope everything works out well for you, sorry to hear about your bad experience
cobieiverson 2010-01-05 17:55:38
To jen23 it can happen right away. I had my IUD (paragard) removed March 23, 2008 and found out on April 4th I was pregnant, and had my second child December 19th. I love my IUD, the heavy periods stopped for me soon after getting it. I've always been plagued with heavy periods so it was no difference in my case. To the ladies with minimal symptoms I hope you stick it out. I think is great and worth it in the end. I've tried everything from the shot to the pill to the patch and this works best for me and that's the main thing.

Hi, ive had the IUD for now 3 yrs. when i first got the IUD it made my period longer than 10 days, extremely heavy flow. i was changing every hour so it wouldnt run through.. really bad cramps, backache.. i still dont get my period on schedule, its still atleast 7-8 days long. the only change is the flow, its not as heavy.. I plan on getting it removed and tying my tubes.

I had my first IUD inserted about on 12/3. I went in on 12/10 for something else and they could not see the strings. They sent me to get an ultrasound on 12/18 to locate it. The technician couldn't see anything on the ultrasound. She did a vaginal and then on my abdomen. Has this ever happened to anyone and should I be worried? I am waiting to hear from my doctor once they get the films and have a chance to look at them. Thanks all
mommyof3boys 2009-12-19 17:05:25
Ok. So. I've had 3 boys as indicated by my display name. I'm 21 years old. My oldest is only 3.5 years. After my first, I went on some kind of oral contraceptive and 4 weeks after giving birth to my oldest I found out I was pregnant with my second boy! My first two boys are only 10 months apart due to failed BCP. My third little boy was born in July 2009. He was planned after going off YAZ BCP (which gave me horrible panic like symptoms and I call it the devils pill). But after 3 little boys, despite eventually wanting a little girl, we wanted a reliable form of birth control that didn't involve hormones. They either don't work or cause me to go nuts! So the midwife suggested the copper IUD. It took me a little while after having the baby to start my period again. In fact, it took 3 months. So in October of 2009, I had the Paragard inserted. They had to manually dilate me, but it wasn't too bad painwise. I bled alot longer than I usually do. Usually I only bleed 3-5 days and I bled for 7-8. Then in November, I was supposed to start the 16th and didn't start till the 17th. It freaked me out a little but with my own explanations and the doctor's reassurance I/we decided it was just my body regulating to the IUD. It's now December 19th and I am 4 whole days late! I don't trust contraceptives. My midwife even told me that this was my problem. But I have the backaches, peeing a lot, strong fatigue and headaches that I had with my other 3 and I only get a few cramps here and there, whereas a few days before I start bleeding on my period I am run down by cramps and pain. I almost feel like my period isn't going to come for quite some time! Has anybody had the IUD inserted and 3 months later become pregnant with it still in place? (Just had appt yesterday and midwife confirmed good positioning of the IUD). Or what about just took longer for your periods to regulate? I figure it should get better each month, not worse. And I'm thinking about having it removed. Last menstrual cycle I was only a day late and my bleeding was bad enough to soak a pad in one hour every hour of the day!! That gets expensive on maxi pads and super tampons! Please email me at
if you have any insight to offer. Thanks. I will also be checking back on here every so often and let you know if I started my period or if I am in fact pregnant 3 months after the IUD was placed and is still in place!

I had my Copper T IUD inserted about 5 years ago and I love it! Immediately after insertion I had some minor cramping and spotting but since then have had no problems. I am about to get it removed because we want to have another baby. Does anyone know how long it takes to conceive I am hoping that it doesn't take too long and that there will be no problems. Please let me know your experiences!

I had my IUD inserted September 2008 and I have severe bleeding and cramping....still. I have spotting all month long. Pain during intercourse, and lower abdominal pain two weeks before I start my period. I feel uncomfortable all the time, especially when I am sitting. I have been searching the web and read many warnings about the IUD, like embeddment, perforation, pregnancy, etc. So I'm getting mine taken out as soon as possible, but I'm worried about having to get it surgically removed or having extreme pain to get it removed, I would say having it inserted was worse than labor! Can anyone tell me about the removal of the IUD being painful??
lindsayhope 2009-11-20 03:30:59
Sadly, I am not sure people are aware that they provide a lot of misinformation in their posts which may deter people from a very safe and effective form of birth control. Nothing comes without side effects and your OBGYN should go over all the side effects and risks of the Paragard so you can make the best choice for yourself.
I am a 29 yo women with no children. After years of suffering from side effects of hormonal BC (migraines, nausea, mood changes, lack of sex drive) my OBGYN offered the Paragard and it is very much a blessing since my partner and I do not want to have children at this time. Insertion was very uncomfortable and painful but your OBGYN can offer assistance with that pain if you are nervous. Because I have not had children, my OBGYN used a drug called Cytotec which helped 'ease' my cervix so insertion was easier. Also taking Nsaids prior are helpful.
As I said, nothing comes without side effects which your OBGYN should FULLY discuss with you and DO NOT be afraid to ask as many questions as you need. It took a few months for my body to adjust and during that time my cycles were irregular, cramping was severe at times. But after a few months, my body seemed to get use to the Paragard and my cycles are pretty much back to normal. I do have heavier, longer periods with more cramping but that is controlled with prescription Nsaids that work very well. I think this is very typical of the Paragard but there are also stories of women who have no cycle changes. And their are also women who can not handle the side effects which can be severe in some women.
The Paragard is a great BC option. It has a lower failure rate than the pill, lasts for 10-12 years, is approved for women that have no children, very safe compared to most BC methods and is completely reversible if you choose to have children or are not happy with the potential side effects.
While these posts are very helpful, they can also scare people to beleive that IUD's are unsafe. Many of the side effects people list are very possibly due to recent child birth or other medical conditions unrelated to the IUD.

Hello Ladies, Okay Here's the deal. I had my IUD inserted after the birth of my son back in December of 2007. Immediately after I got it I began to experience stomach cramps, abnormal periods, hot flashes, change in eating habits, and slight mood swings. The doctors said i just had to get used to this iud being in me. Ok recently I have had problems with my sex drive, I can't seem to self lubricate. I had to use a product called RePlens to rerstore my natural moisture. Now I keep getting all kind of Vaginal Infections. I have gotten so much now when I get them I just used homeopathic methods to treat it because I already know what it is. But, now the infections are getting more and more severe. Has anyone else had this issue if so please let me know because I was told if the infections continue to get more severe, There is a possibility I will have to have a hysterectomy.

i'm 19, never pregnant and i got my copper IUD inserted at 17 set for college. i think it's really great because i've been on and off the pill, i just couldn't keep up with taking it everyday so i stopped altogether using condoms. with the IUD i don't have to worry about anything for 12 years, i recommend it for everyone. I love it and wished i got it sooner. the worst part for me was the insertion because it was painful and i had awful cramping (occasional cramping and some spotting) afterward but Advil and hot baths helped.

I had my ParaGard put in a week ago yesterday and the cramping the 1st day was pretty bad but I haven't had any after that. I was wondering how long it takes for the bleeding to stop. I am still bleeding after 7 days and they put it in 3 days into my period.

I got my Paragard inserted on Friday afternoon...I was nervous about the pain, but was pleasantly surprised! The doc (not my usual but I loved her!) asked me if I wanted a local anesthetic to which I accepted quickly! (that was the only part that was uncomfortable). She actually had to tell me she was done~! She told me she has done hundreds of IUDs so that calmed my nerves also. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes and most of it was waiting for the shot to kick in. I am so excited that I didn't let the "horror" stories deter me from getting the Paragard. I have not had but a tiny bit of cramping (not anything i can't handle not even worth taking anything for) and a little spotting (which i expected). I have checked for my strings twice and they are hardly noticeable. They have softened from my body (heat and moisture i guess). I was worried about how stiff they were (my doc let me feel them after she cut them). I recommend the Paragard to everyone! :D I was so excited after it was done I actually hugged the doctor~ lol! I'll keep you updated on how everything keeps going! So far I'm 3 days post insertion and lovin' it! P.S. I'm 29 and have 2 kids. My youngest is 13 months.

Hi everyone, I had the copper IUD placed last Tuesday it has been over a week now. I have been in constant pain. My left side is cramping, and my period has not come yet. I started to bleed but its not normal. Its heavy then stops then starts. I just went for an ultrasound in insure its placed correctly. I am terrified that I could have a hole in my uterus. I am also concerned with the horror stories about people not being able to become pregnant after having the IUD in. Are there any success stories or should I just get it removed right away?
HallesMomma 2009-05-25 08:54:56
I have had 2 IUDs put in. I just love the Paragard and have never had any complications. I have had the first one in for 2 years and this 2nd one I have had in for 2 and a half years. We are planning on taking it out in 2 months to try for baby #2. I have had 3 family members/friends get IUDs in the past year and so far they love them as well. Since I have not had any problems with either one of them I am planning on getting an IUD every 10 years even after we stop having kids instead of tying my tubes. After getting the first IUD out it only took 4 months to get pregnant and had no complications. Of course all forms of birth control have some side effects for some women but it has worked for me and so far for others who are very close to me. My periods are normal to light and last about 5 to 7 days. Love the Paragard and recommend it over the Merina bc of it having no hormones.

hello, i recently had a visit with my doctor and he told me that i may never be able to use any type of birth control that has hormones in it. I was woundering if the ParaGard IUD would be right for me. I already have one child and my partner already has one as well and we are not wanting another for a while and dont want to take the chance of haveing a surprise pregnancey . So if anyone here could help us out on deciding what to do i would really like that. And could someone tell me about what can of side effects could occur while having the IUD. If you could just e-mail us at
we would apperciate it, thanks

I think you should consult with a medical doctor if you are getting bad migraines headaches. My first thought though is that it has nothing to do with your IUD, but may be the result of knots that are being activated when your muscles contract. You might get the same problem when you go out in extremely cold weather. I would try a message therapist before I pulled out my IUD.
I didn't have any problem with this device after having it put in so I am miffed by all the IUD horror stories. The only thing that I did notice was that I was slightly dizzy the few hours that it was placed, but the placement was painless. I occasionally get cramps, however, they are so mild that it isn't even worth taking a mild pain killer for. I tried the IUD after the pill--which had side effects that were far worse like changes in mood (I got a flat mood), lack of desire in sexual activity, and spotting that mirrored menstruation.
After read over the comments I cannot help to think that anyone looking for information on IUDS is going to get extremely misinformed as most of the comments that I have read over explain this method of birth control as either being incredibly painful (it is not), dangerous, or ineffective. The chance of actually getting pregnant with an IUD in is less than 1%. Women who use this devices simply aren't going to get pregnant, and that can be a big relief for the woman and for her sex partner. There is also no need to use birth control at all (unless you are trying to protect against STDs which in the US are still rare in non-homosexual couples). It is a good choice for anyone who doesn't want to be bothered messing with less effective methods of birth control. It is also a wonderful for teenage girls that may not have the judgment to use the pill and who aren't realistically going to abstain.
The down side to this is that method is that your body can expel the IUD so you have to check for your strings. I have read some comments where women claim that their partners can feel the strings, and that is unlikely if the strings are cut correctly. Possibly those partners are embellishing their experience because they don't like the psychological effect not being able to impregnate their mate. That brings me to another plus of this method, as no matter how romantic we ladies get (and sometimes it seems romantic) being pregnant is no fun and has a higher mortality rate than the insertion and maintenance of an IUD.
The pill is bad for your body--it confuses your endocrine system--and has side effects which are still unknown. You can make a mistake taking the pill and spermicides and condoms may cause cancer. Given our options--tube ligation also has a higher mortality rate and damages the endocrine system--I would go with this method. Heavy periods can usually be eliminated simply by taking ibprophen a few days before your period. The biggest problem with bleeding is probably that the doctors aren't taking it seriously and aren't telling their patients how to reduce their blood flow. IUD is a good way to go.

Hello I need some help ever since I have had my paragard back in, I have gotten really bad like migraines after an orgasm and I would love to know if this is a common side effect please someone help me with my ? if you know the answer

I actually have the Mirena right now (inderted 4/0 and am struggling with the symptoms you mentioned (mood changes, depressed mood, low sex drive, etc.). Of course my doctors tell me that it's "incredibly rare" for Mirena to cause these side effects, but they are willing to listen to me and have offered to switch me to the Paragard. I was just wondering if your symptoms improved on the Paragard?
Thanks so much!

Dear sweetnsexy, Why are you afraid of having sex with your husband and the use of tampons? I have the paraguard and have never had any problems other than the normal side effects. I will answer any questions I can.

Hello, I had my Paraguard inserted a week ago, and so far my bleeding has stopped, mild cramps every other day, and I have a light pinkish discharge. I have not had sex with my husband due to fear, and my Dr. did say I can use tampons,( which I am afraid too also). Has anyone had any major problems with this iud? know of any deaths? or Perforation of the uterus? Overall I think i may be happy with the paraguard. OH, 2 days ago i woke up with a MIGRANE.

I've been freaking out for the past couple of days. I recently got Paragard put in and lately I've been having a lot of vaginal discharge. I'm freaking out and really don't know what to think. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had my paragard IUD inserted almost 5 years ago after the birth of my twins. I can't take anything hormonal, but wanted a reliable method of birth control. This IUD was perfect. My periods are very "normal" and I don't ever have to worry about becoming pregnant unwantedly. I've since divorced and met another man who is very excited to have children and I'm excited about the fact that I can have it removed and will be fertile immediately and can start trying to conceive again. I highly recommend the Paragard IUD.

so my birth control story is a long one. in march 2007 i had the mirena IUD put in. after a year of traumatic side effects (mood swings, no sex drive, horrible acne on my practicly flawless skin and absolutely no periods) i decided to switch my birth control. i was on the pill for one month and after continously forgetting to take it and gaining 5lbs in a month i knew i needed to figure something out. so i went with the copper IUD. i had in put in in april of 2008 and besides heavy bleeding and cramping (something i never experienced before) it was great! just the thought of no hormones in my body was a wonderful thought. my 3 year old son is now begging for a sibling and my husband and i are completely ready. so i got my period on september 11th and couldnt get an appointment with my ob-gyn till the 29th. she was a little nervous since i had sex 3 days before and coincidentally according to my 32 day cycle i was ovulating the day my IUD was removed. she said i should expect my period since there were no hormones in the IUD and if i didnt get it to come in and take a pregnancy test. ive started prenatal vitamins as well. it has been a month now since the removal and still no period. ive take 4 preganancy tests and all negative. the doctor said if i dont get a period by tuesday i need to get a blood test. is this normal?? ive felt some symptoms and i feel pregnant but is it possible?? HELPPPP!

I had the ParaGard IUD put in after my third girl was born, in December 2004. In June 2008, i find out I am now PREGNANT with another baby girl, WITH the IUD STILL IN. I am 5 months pregnant, with the WONDERFUL ParaGard IUD still in.

I just got my paragard IUD put in on Tuesday. I have 3 children, but all were born via c-section. The dr had to manually dialate me to fit the IUD. It was painful having it placed. I am on Lupron for endometriosis I do not get a period. I was crampy for about a day, spotted for another, but I feel great, and dont have to worry about getting pregnant since I can only be on lupron for 6 mos at a time and the last time I stopped the treatment I got pregnant within a month. Just wondering what I should expect after getting this put in. Thanks

I had mine fitted and haven't yet given birth. I had local anaesthetic though as I expected it to be painful. It was so easy but I wouldn't have considered it without an anaesthetic-I did'nt see why I should have to.
I have just had it changed for a Mirena as it made my bleeding heavy and I didn't like the cramping. I think I may have just been unlucky.

i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. i had a copper iud inserted 9 years ago. it was recently removed in december 2007. my periods have been irregular going from 28 days to 35 one month 40. and lasting from 4-5 days. we are trying to get pregnant, but nothing so far. How long does it take for your periods to be regular again?. Are there any sideeffects or hormonal problems after the removal of a copper iud?
