The intrauterine device (IUD ) is a safe and effective method of birth control used by many women worldwide. Copper IUD may be used for ten years after insertion, whereas hormone releasing IUD’s expire after 5 years of use and must then be removed or replaced.

There are different reasons for the IUD to be removed. Most often they are removed at the expiration date. All IUD's both copper and hormone releasing IUD's must be removed at expiration date. The use of these devices after expiration date may lead to different complications and even infertility in some women.

Reasons for IUD removal

IUD removalThe most frequent reason why the intrauterine device is removed before its use expires is pain and bleeding. This happens usually within the first year of use. Other reasons include intrauterine infection, expulsion and pregnancy due to the method failure. Also, a woman can decide to have her IUD removed when she wants to discontinue using contraception in order to become pregnant.

In menopausal women the intrauterine device is usual to be removed within one year after disappearance of menstruation . No developed complications have been reported, in cases where IUD has not been removed.

Just as the insertion of intrauterine device the removal of this contraceptive method must be performed by a health care provider, including a midwife or nurse, who is trained to do it. It is not a complicated procedure and is performed routinely. The health care provider may remove this type of birth control device at any time. Bear in mind that it might be easier to remove IUD during menstrual bleeding, though it is not that hard to remove it at any other time.

It is important to reduce the risk of infection by taking regular infection prevention measures. The health care specialist grasps the threads at the external exit with ring forceps and then slowly and gently pulls them away from the uterus, avoiding the breakage of the string. If it is not possible to move IUD , the practitioner should stop traction and find out the reasons why the device is stuck. In case an IUD is deep in the uterus, hysteroscopy may be needed for safe removal of it.

If it is the removal of an expired IUD, a new one can be inserted immediately after removal, if a woman wants to continue this mean of birth control .

So, iv been to my doctor twice in the past 3 months, cus i keep cramping, (I have the marina), and she wont take it out, because "its the best form of birth controll" which im sure it is, but i dont want it cause of the crramping, and I want another child. So I took it out yesterday myself, and spotted just a little bit. How long until I will become pregnant and am I going to be okay by doing this myself??? :?

OK ladies question for you I got my IUD removal on 7/102010 and when I had it removed the OB ask if I had sex within the last 72 hours and I did. She said it is very likely that i could be preggos or could get preggos. Has anyone else heard this??? Also when I heard this I went home and took a O.H.T and it was pos. But I started bleeding like a period, (1st one is 3 years). Just wondering if you think I cold still be preggos?

Hey ladies I'm 31 yrs old w/ 2 toddler boys. I want to try for the girl. I've had the 10 yr IUD in place for 9 mo's now not to mentioned I've NOT stopped menstrating since the day it was inserted last Aug of '09. My dr checked and everything was fine. She said my body had to get used to a foreign object. I'm having it removed this Fri May 14th. I've had enough mentrating. Question is will I be able to Expect again right away or will my body need time to go back to it's "normal" cycle then maybe I can hope to Expect ?? Anyone know or experiance anything similar?? :)

Hello Ladies,
I'm 25 already a mother of one baby boy. He's 15 months old.
Well I had my IUD removed on Feb.19, 2010. My question is this....
I started bleeding on the 21st to the 22nd... was that my so called "period"?
My next question is this... I'm been peeing a lot and been nauseous for almost a week. I took a test yesterday and it was a faint negative... Could I be pregnant?
If so great cause my husband is getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan and we wanted another baby!

I need advice on what to do? :? null

Hi! I have been on the Mirena for almost 3 years and have just had it recently removed. While I was on the mirena I never had a period, and really did not know when ovulation occured. I realized that I had unprotected sex (actually on mirena at the time), 3-5 days before removal. My Dr. put me on Birthcontrol pills the same day of removal of course, but I am wondering if there were sperm still in my system, and could have had conception that same day? Or if thats possible. Seeming that I didn't know when I was ovulating, I was in hopes that it wasn't a fertile day? I had IUD removed and put back on the pills, so I could have a regular period, and be getting ready to have a baby...in the near far away future. LOL. Any answers would be greatly appreciated?

WOW! Lot's of strange comments here. I have my own story and it's not positive.

The Mirena was suggested to me by my gyno after a year of ridiculous bleeding. I have a couple of fibroids but my doctor said that had nothing to do with my heavy, very long bleeding. Sometimes my periods would last a month. I do have a son but he was born in 2004. I have never done well on the pill and after a new doctor of mine screwed up my prescription, things went from bad to worse. I started getting migraines and was told to stop the pill. So a year later, the mirena. I got it inserted of DEC of 2009. The first month was great..I loved it but then things started to change. I was weak but couldn't sleep, I started gaining weight and as others have posted here, it looked like I was pregnant. By the beginning of April, I had gained 20 lbs. My hair wasn't growing. I have very short hair so it's noticeable when it's growing out. I normally trim every two weeks, it has been 2 months since I needed to trim it. I was getting strange cramping. I also had lost and libido I once had which used to be mighty and strong! I started searching sites for my symptoms and came across numerous sites about IUD's. All the "negative" quotes were the very similar to what I was going through. I made an appointment to talk to my doctor, this was last week. I told her what was going on and she immediately suggested I get it taken out. She told me the she has patients who do very well on the mirena but she has many who have my same issues. Now I'm going through the cramping and passing clots. It's no fun at all but I'll tell you this, I'm back to sleeping like the dead. It's wonderful.

My feeling towards those acting like we've all made this up in our head...shut up. I would rather weigh the worst of what is possible then the best. I did my research and had extensive conversations with my doc, and felt this was worth a try. I tried it and it didn't work, plain and simple.

If I were weighing this simply on BC, I would have never done it, my husband and I are completely fine with condoms and spermicide, this was for medical reasons and it made me feel half dead at 32. Ladies who are thinking about getting it, weigh your options and if your insurance pays for it, I say try it, you might be just fine and if it doesn't work, take it out... If you have to pay for it yourself? I'd think twice unless you don't mind blowing the $300 or so bucks.

i have read so many post on here and honestly I CANT relate to most of you. I had my IUD for just about 5 years. I never had any of the side effects everyone is talking about. I have had migranes since i was 11, I havent had one in years. I LOST weight, due to excersise and eating right. I use to lose my hair but since cutting it all off (I had really long hair) i havent lost anymore. To have it put in I dont remember it hurting like everyone is saying, some slight cramping and thats it. removing it was a piece of cake, no problems at all. I have not had a real period in just about 5 years. All these crazy stories scare people, when in fact they dont happen to everyone. after I have a second baby I will for sure get another one!

My question is about after the removal. I had it removed March 23rd because we want our second child. I had spotting 2 days after for about 2 days. then about 2 weeks later is when everything started to happen. Breast are tender and about a cup bigger, sick to my stomach, overly tired, emotional. All the classic pregnancy symptoms which would be great but 4 negative test. I am suppose to have my period tomorrow and I sure dont feel like its coming. I guess I just want to know if I could be pregnant just a month after having it removed.

Oh and to add to my last comment. .....I've also gotten ovarian cysts since I've had the paragard put in and my breasts are sore all the time. with the water retention, and pain (from the cysts) I was afraid I was pregnant so I went to the doc. and that's when I found out it was cysts on my ovaries. CYST?!! I've never had them before! All of that and weight gain, always tired etc!! Damn if I wanted my body to react like i was pregnant I would become pregnant!

I've had my IUD paragard in for about a year now. I hate it! I've been gaining weight ever since. I've had three children and this is the heaviest I've ever been, even when I was prego. My body is acting like it's pregnant. I'm nautious , dizzy, my body retains water like it does when I'm pregnant, my legs and ankles are really bad. :upset It's uncomfortable when I make love too. I'm setting up an appointment to get it removed.

Of course my strings are missing and i tryed to let them "fish" it out before going the day surgery route!! I have to say i reached my pain level that day! Ladies there is a whole new meaning to "a little pressure"!!! Anyways my surgery is march 23 and im rather nervous!!! Any insight to the procedure???? Anything?????

Hi all,

Im very new to this im lookin for advice.
I got my merina out on feb 9th 2010 because i want baby no 2. i had d coil in for 3 and a half years and have no complaints about it it was super i bleed for the first 6 month after gettin it in but nearly none since. in fact i got my first period in that time on feb 1st this year 9 days before getting coil out. now i still aint got a period which i taught i would but 2days after removal i had slight spottin very red n clumpy and pain when i urinate with nothing since and i have been very moody n very bad sick tummy for 5 days now now i had unprotected sex 2 days before removal. Now i wonder when will i get my period, did i ovulate or could i be pregnant its to early to test i think andno other pregnancy symptoms. my doctor said to be careful that many women get pregnant in the first month so if ya dont want it that soon to use other forms of contraception but did she mean before or after your first period and if so when should the first period return as i cant remember my cycle before the coil.

Would be great if anyone could help.

I Am in NEED of some answers? So if anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated!

1. Who has conceived a boy after having the copper IUD removed?
2. Who has had miscarriages after miscarriages after removing the copper IUD?

I had mine removed in June 2009, waited a month got prego in August, lost it in October and bleed for 3 weeks. Was waiting trying to wait another month but may or may did not get pregnant again in November? But missed a period & tested positive but then started bleeding again one week in dec then again at end of Jan 2010 and have been bleeding since??? Docter has not been too helpful besides testing hormone levels???

If only I would have known that risks of complications after the IUD were this high and even more so it's harder to have a boy!! No way in hell would I have put that foreign object into my body and destoried my births! Anyone please help. Thank you!

Hello All, I am new to this posting site and it looks really interesting and helpful. So my husband and I have decided to have another baby. I am getting the mirena IUD removed March 5 (I believe that is the correct date). Does anyone have any advice for me? I do not know what to expect after it is removed and hoping to conceive pretty fast. I had to have it inserted due to heavy bleeding. Has anyone else had the IUD inserted for heavy bleeding and if so what happened after the IUD was removed? Hope to hear from someone soon. :)

Hi, I'm new to this site, Well my story is I decided to get the iud removed after me being sick I have dysmenorrhea so i got on birth control at 15 so i could stop getting sick on my cycles i got pregnant on the pill at age 16, had my daughter at 17 3 days later i was on the shot, got off the shot because it gave me excessive weight gain and high blood pressure. Not to mention when i was 15 i started on the patch then pregnant off the pill high blood pressure on the shot now the iud made me nausous all day everyday. So now my doc says my body needs a hormonal break. While on the iud my period came every 2 1/2 mths. So i got my iud taken out jan 20th, me and my husband decided to conceive so I really don't know when to expect my period because it was never normal. So my guess is to wait and see if my period comes this mth and take a test the 1st of march. any pointers...??? :roll

hi everyone..hmm..my story..my boyfriend and i are trying to have a baby of our own really bad..he already has one from a previous relationship but wants another with me and i desperately want to have a child as well..had the mirena removed 1/6/10 and two days later 1/8/10 started my period which til now is going..usually i have a pretty regular menstrual cycle..i knew i was going to start on the 8th but usually i end on the fifth day..but the bleeding is still pretty heavy..prior to removal we have had intercourse and all along after...hopefully with all this trying by next month i'll have good news..but from reading all the comments on here..everyone seems to be different and some get preggo quickly after and some do not..i, on the other hand hope to be one of the lucky ones..let's just keep our fingers crossed on that one..to me this would be more of a miracle than anything..this baby if conceived, would literally save my life..right now..everything is up to God, so hopefully He is listening..to everyone out there who is also trying to conceive..good luck on this wonderful, yet, chaotic journey that we have to go through ladies..hope that everyone receives good news sooner rather than later..but a news is a news whenever it does occur..Good luck!!!!!! :)

Hi everyone, just wanted to share my story I got my IUD removed on 12/7/09, started a very heavy period on 12/10/09 that lasted for 10 days. Had sex on the 21st and the 24th. Found out on Sunday 1/3/10 that I am pregnant. I took 4 different kinds of HPT's. Now I'm worried that I didn't give my body a chance to "recover" before getting pregnant.

My Iud actually fell out last night. I have had it for 2 yrs in Feb.I have had quite a few of the side effects as well...1st, i have never reeally had a "period" on it. it has just been 0o surprise ur period is here, 2 days later it was over...than about a day or two it would be back. Very wierd. And usually everytime after intercourse i would get some kind of period. Hair loss, depression, and moodiness, you name it i prob had it. So for about a week i have felt it slowly coming down and down and then last night it just kind of came out. I called the Dr. and they said no emergency, just make an appt. It didnt even hurt coming out. Me and my husband are thinking about another baby, wondering how fast can i become pregnant. Since my cycle has been out of wack from day one..i really dont know when i am ovulating so is it more likely to get pregnant right away or what is the best advice? Not sure. Thanks!

Hi everyone. I'm new to this. I was wondering if anyone can answer me. My last MP was 10/13 and I had my IUD (Paragard) removed the 27th. We had intercourse that same night! I calculated to ovulate that same day too! Now, my MP didnt come today...and I've taken 3 tests last week that all said negative. I also took one today and it still said negative. What are the chances I could still be pegnant?? Anyone?

I have had the Copper IUD for almost 4 years. It has no hormones so I still have a short period, mild cramps, and mild mood swings. But I have lost almost 70 lbs since I have been on it. I still get monthly cravings around my period, but I had to learn to control them. While I was on the Depo shot I gained 65 lbs in 9 months and had difficulties getting pregnant. It took me almost 4 years to get pregnant with my daughter! So I learned that I could not use hormone-type birth control. I talked it over with my Dr, and he suggested the hormone free IUD, and I have been grateful ever since. I am getting ready to have it removed, but have every intention of getting the same one after baby #2 (God willing)!

Hello ladies. I am 22 and have a 2 year old. I have had the IUD for about a year and a half with almost no problems. My husband and I thought it was a good idea and since my memory wasnt good enought for the pill, we decided on the IUD. I have been on many sites and I am finding that many women have cramping or pain as a result of this IUD. I must say I enjoy its effectiveness BUT, I have gained 70 lbs in the last year and a half. null
At first I thought It was "baby weight" but it was coming rapidly. 5-10 pounds a month. I am tall and before my baby was born I was 165lbs. But because I am 5' 10'' that was fine. I was in a size 9-10. After my baby was born I gained 15 lbs from the birth, but now I am 240. I have a membership at 24 hour fitness and I played basketball and softball in college so I always stay active. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced horrible weight gain. I have an appointment to have the IUD removed but my doctor keeps making me feel as though its my fault. my diet isnt to bad, nothing different than what I was eating before and during the pregnatcy. The doctor Says it does not contain hormones that would make me gain.

Someone please talk to me...

I just got done reading all of the comments left by the others. I came looking for information on hormones and IUD removals. I have to give my story. In April 05, I had the Marina inserted. I was looking for a BC method that would be easy... no pills, no shots. So this looked like the best answer. Once the inital day of cramping was over, it was the best thing I did. The first 6 months i only spotted and then after that I never had a period. I loved it when I went to the MDs office and they asked when my last cycle was and I always told them a few years ago. My hormones leveled off. No mood swings, no weight gains, and no pms to boot. I can honestly say it was the best method that i had tried. Earlier this month, it was time to have it removed. My husband and I have been waiting and planning this for some time, wanting to get pregnant. Removal was a piece of cake, no pain just a little pinch. After about a month, im starting to notice that my hormones are all out of wack. I used to have mood swings as a teenager and they are back full force. I am very lucky to have a man that is willing to put up with a lot from me. :grin

Like many others, I am so glad to have found this site with so many other women reporting similar issue as I. At least I know that it is the product and not me, or my boyfriend for that matter. Since getting the IUD I have had many problems ranging from minor to severe. I was on my period for about 4 months after getting this IUD. It was heavy at first, but then I continued to spot for the next three months afterward. My doctor said that this was to be perceived as more of a nuisance than a health concern, so I dealt with it and kept my IUD. Later, I saw a new doctor and during my regular exam she had found that my IUD string had gotten sucked up into my uterus. Now I know that whenever I do decide to get it removed (which, at this point the lack of string is the only thing holding me back) it is going to be very painful and the procedure will last longer. My periods then became very infrequent. I would have one every three months or so. Now, after having it close to three years, my periods are very regular. I get them every 6 weeks or so, yet they last for almost 2 weeks or longer. On top of all of this, I get a yeast infection every month. This has been going on for a little over a year now. I talked to a nurse practitioner who specializes in this area and she said that this is uncommon and it can be treated by using a low dosage yeast infection cream one dose per week for a couple months. However, once I stopped using the cream they just came back again. She suggested that I may just be "allergic" to my partner. Now, thanks to this site and hearing many similar stories I know that this evil IUD (which has also caused me to gain weight and experience crazy cystic acne, which I've never had a problem with before and I'm 23) just needs to come out. Pain or no pain, constant yeast infections not only are a nuisance but can't be good for me in the long run anyway. Other than the low maintenance bit, this IUD has been nothing but trouble and so not worth it. I'd rather take a pill everyday. :(

Hi everyone,
I'm a bit worried as I had my Mirena coil in for 5 years with no probems at all...I thought it was the best thing I had ever done.
I have 2 children aged 11 and 6 and got the mirena removed on the 3rd Nov 08, nearly 5 months ago....within a couple of days I had a day or 2 of very light bleeding or spotting and then on the 26th of December I bleed for 6 days with constant cramps and it was really really really heavy if you know what I mean.
My husband and myself decided to try for another child in January, but to no avail I haven't got a period for January, February or March. I have tried dozens of pregnancy tests as I keep getting cramps in my stomach, tender breast, and feeling sick etc...all the right signs but all the tests are negative.
I don't know why I'm not getting any periods, I'm taking folic acid and multi vitamins, I'm eating really healthy and excercising, I don't smoke and I rarely drink alcohol and I'm only 30 years of age. I really don't know what is wrong and I'm afraid to go to the doctor in fear she is going to tell me something really horrible is wrong with me and we can't have any more kids....which I know is really stupid and I'm working myself into a frenzy.
Any advice would be much appreciated!!!!! :?

well, i had mine removed on monday march 2nd 2009. I had my mirena removed because i was in constant pain. I heard that cleansing your body with natural herbs helps heal you quicker. taking natural aloe( not the pills) does help.
I had such bad cramps after sex when i had the mirena, that i think not having it is a blessing. this device made me gain weight and get acne. i went through puberty pimples free. I am now 22 and I hope I havent screwed my chances of reproducing. :sigh

I had my IUD Mirena removed on 2.11.09 and started spotting on 2.13.09. I had it for 2.5 years and it was a piece of cake to get it removed. My husband has been wanting another baby and I want to surprise him! We've been trying every night since it was removed but my doc said to take a pregnancy test if I don't get my period in 2 weeks. I'm still spotting...Will keep you posted!
