The intrauterine device (IUD ) is a safe and effective method of birth control used by many women worldwide. Copper IUD may be used for ten years after insertion, whereas hormone releasing IUD’s expire after 5 years of use and must then be removed or replaced.
There are different reasons for the IUD to be removed. Most often they are removed at the expiration date. All IUD's both copper and hormone releasing IUD's must be removed at expiration date. The use of these devices after expiration date may lead to different complications and even infertility in some women.
Reasons for IUD removal
The most frequent reason why the intrauterine device is removed before its use expires is pain and bleeding. This happens usually within the first year of use. Other reasons include intrauterine infection, expulsion and pregnancy due to the method failure. Also, a woman can decide to have her IUD removed when she wants to discontinue using contraception in order to become pregnant.
In menopausal women the intrauterine device is usual to be removed within one year after disappearance of menstruation . No developed complications have been reported, in cases where IUD has not been removed.
Just as the insertion of intrauterine device the removal of this contraceptive method must be performed by a health care provider, including a midwife or nurse, who is trained to do it. It is not a complicated procedure and is performed routinely. The health care provider may remove this type of birth control device at any time. Bear in mind that it might be easier to remove IUD during menstrual bleeding, though it is not that hard to remove it at any other time.
It is important to reduce the risk of infection by taking regular infection prevention measures. The health care specialist grasps the threads at the external exit with ring forceps and then slowly and gently pulls them away from the uterus, avoiding the breakage of the string. If it is not possible to move IUD , the practitioner should stop traction and find out the reasons why the device is stuck. In case an IUD is deep in the uterus, hysteroscopy may be needed for safe removal of it.
If it is the removal of an expired IUD, a new one can be inserted immediately after removal, if a woman wants to continue this mean of birth control .

Hiya to all you ladies I too had the Mirena Coil fitted in 2003 after having my last child,i loved it,no periods no side effects best things i did ever have.I checked my coil regulary every month and even kept it in during my chemo and radiotherapy for breast cancer in 2006.I was told that my treatment would have put my body through natural hysterectomy but to be sure i kept it in.Well after the new year came round in 2007 was still checking for my strings and yes they were there,it was due to be removed in oct 2008.June i think it was when i couldnt find my threads and got worried and made an appointment with the doctor.I did go see her and she also said she couldnt find them but said more than likely they would have expelled at some time.I worried and made an appoinment with a gynocologist and when i went to him he gave me a vaginal scan which reveiled nothing!!Thats not saying he didnt try cause he made me bleed,he thought he could see strings and started pulling with these tweezer things. : ( that was horrible.Any way i left with the thought that i had expelled my Mirena and didnt do nothing else as now i have no periods due to tomoxifen.Well in september this year had to go have a x ray on my hips as i trouble with lots of pains and guess what? I saw it there on the xray! right under my ribs!!! how on earth did that get there and the specialist laughed and asked if i had been bunjjy jumping! i have now got to have it surgically removed and have an appoinment oct 13th.I am worried as to what would be happening and would like to hear any stories about the surgery.I will never have the Mirena again.I hope all you ladies dont suffer and continue to say No to this Mirena as all i can see is happy things said about it,but its not good and it messes with your head and body.Good luck to everyone and take care x

I removed my IUD 4 months ago.And I've had it for 4yrs. And I just found out that I'm pregnant. But I was told. I was supposed to take a pill. Not sure of what kind. But, It's something that does not mess your spine or the baby spine?! I'm not sure. I need to find out what's it called. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? If so, HELP!

Hello, everyone and congratulations on the positives. I posted my situation on 3/15/11 and also updated everyone with my situation after. My doctor had to refer me to another doctors office because I am high risk. I went last Wednesday 3/23/11 for my appt. and they did the usual blood work and decided they could fit me in that day for a ultrasound. As they were doing the ultrasound the tech was really quite and I asked if something was wrong. She stated she was going to have the doctor come in and let me know what was going on, he started asking me all kinds of questions and stated I should be showing a lot more than what they saw. I than asked them "WHAT DO YOU SEE"!!! And he stated all that was there was just a yolk sac, no fetal pole. I was crying at this point and he stated that I may have miscarried or it got to that point and stopped growing, I than had a million and one questions. He told me that first comes he gestational sac then the yolk sac and a few days later the fetal pole. So, he had my HCG levels taken 2 days apart Weds and Friday, while I was getting my blood drawn on Friday the tech said that she wouldn’t let me wait over the weekend and that she would call me as soon as she got the results in. By that afternoon I was a mess, she called me and stated all looked good they were rising the way that they should be (Weds..37-39 and Friday..58-59) and not to worry. So they wanted me back in on 3/31/11 (today) for another ultrasound. And, they saw my little baby, fetal pole, heart beat (137) and all!!!! So, thinking back to the three days in Feb. where I had bleeding my doctor said that was my monthly cycle adjusting itself and going by the 16th of Feb. would put me right where I should be 6 weeks and 1 day. Keeping my fingers crossed!!! Please if you find out really early don’t get upset or stressed out or even if your situation is like mine. I found out on the 12th of March and my tests were light positives and those were with the cheap dollar store ones, I than bought a more expensive one and it was darker, so I found out when I was only a little over 3 weeks. And the doctors were going by my last cycle that was on the 31st of Jan and that lasted for 10 days and not the 3 days after that when I bleed on the 16th of Feb. they were wrong!!!!! ~ Sincerely, wishing everyone the best of luck this month!!!

Hello All! I just found this site and am encouraged by your comments. I want to introduce myself and ask for any advice... I am 29 years old (turning 30 on Feb. 11!) and my husband told me on Friday night that he thinks I should have my IUD removed (I was delighted). I have no kids, and there was some controversy as to whether or not they should have inserted the Mirena. I've had it for a few years and have an appointment to have it removed this Thursday (Jan. 27). I'm excited and nervous at the same time! We plan to get started right away and I would love some pointers! Maybe things you would have liked to have known when you were in my position - the good, the bad, the ugly!
My doctors have already warned me that I could have a very painful and complicated pregnancy because of a rare disorder I've had since birth - Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome (you can find some info on google). The only reason I share this is because I am used to hearing negative medical news. But I always love hearing the positive.
My mother says that the females in our family our "very fertile" so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Thanks for listening/reading, KWS

@trying2concieve I understand how you feel. Waiting can get the best of you. The best advice that I have is to try not to think about it. Yes, I know that is impossible. The more you think about it, read about it, stress about the longer it may take. The stress will cause your body to react negatively. My advice is chart your periods on a menstral calendar, try every other day, and only test the day of or after your period should have arrived. I wish you the best.

I had the IUD removed in 2009 after having it for 5 years, I decided to get it again and had it for some months befre having it removed in 2010 (june) due to some crazy complications. My husband and I have been TTC now for over 7 months and no luck, I had became obsessed with getting pregnant. My periods are very irregular, some months I miss and some months I come on, it's so frustrating, I am turning 30 within days and already have 2 children from a previous relationship my husbans has children from a previous relationship as well but we would like to have a baby together my daughte is now 12 and my son is 9 so I am needing to get pregnant as I am typing this message LBVS! I need some advice, I have tried to just give up on trying so hard but I think about it everyday all day, I google "how to get pregnant?" all day long. my husband told me that I have until next year this time to be pregnant or he's leaving me! I'm happy to know that he was just joking but it shows me how adamint about having a baby.............

Just joined today. So my story age 23 Had my son 3yrs ago,Took a year to get pregnant, got the iud. Wasn't planning on having another child. Got my papsmear in Aug 2010 and my gynecologist said that the string to my iud had pierced the side of my skin where its suppose to be hanging down. Ever since then the iud has been making me have sharp pains even with no period, sex hurts. Have had normal periods with it. Husband and I decided we wanted to try for a baby so I have an apt in 2 days to get it removed. Wanted it out sooner but that was the earliest they could get me in. Ive been cramping so I tried to schedule the apt earlier but they said no opening. Today I started spotting lightly which now Im worried they are going to make me reschedule till after my period stopped which I do not want to do. Since it took so long to get pregnant with my first son I want to start asap for the second one. Praying they dont make me reschedule so I can get my period and bleeding from removal of iud done at the same time. I have bought an ovulation test and basal thermometer(never used them before) to prepare myself. Do yall think my doc will keep my apt if Im lightly bleeding? Dont want to call and ask cause they might make me cancel. I just want this awful thing out of me. And if you have tips on the ovulation test and basal thermometer or anything else to heighten chances of getting pregnant please share. Thanks so much

I'm wondering if any of you have had side effects from IUD removal? I had my IUD removed about almost three weeks now on Dec 08, my period then came on Dec 10th very normal. But this last week I have been feeling a bit nauseas, a headache, and feverish? is my body having withdrawals? I'm hoping to get pregnant right away, took a test yesterday but was negative is this to early for test? Not feeling good at all and I know no one around me at home or work has a cold or the flu? I'm just wondering if my body is reacting like this to withdrawals?

Hi, I'm 29 and my husband is 42, almost 43. We have one daughter, Charlotte who will be 3 on Jan. 4th. I got my IUD removed on September 9th, 2010. I had two periods in September. One period on October 20, and Nov. 15th. Every month I think that I am pregnant, had sore breasts, throwing up, bloating, cramping and took about 20 tests! Still not pregnant. I thought for sure this month I was and I started my period yesterday the 10th So now will try again. My friend gave me the Clear Blue Easy Ovulation kit so I will try those this month. We are praying to get pregnant soon! I love hearing all of your stories!!! Congrats to all of you are pregnant! And I will pray for all of us who are trying

UPDATE! I got my IUD removed Oct 22. Got my period Nov 10th and was supposed to get my period on Dec 8th but didn't. Took a pregnancy yesterday and it came back inconclusive. 2 lines but one was really light. So I took another one today and it was definitely positive!! As clear as day! It is very possible to get pregnant immediately after IUD removal! I am so happy and I wish all you luck! Baby dust all around ♥ -Christabelle

For everyone wondering if they will be able to conceive after an IUD removal, the answer for me is yes. I had my IUD (Mirena) for about 4 years. I have a 9 year old son and I was ready to try to have my 2nd child. I had my IUD removed on 9/29/10. I bled very heavy for 10 days. We immediately began to try, just to come to find out that I had a cyst on my right ovary. My doctor stated that it may take time to conceive due to this factor, which was very disappointing to me. However, I still had no period. I tested at the beginning of November and received a negative test and once again tested a week later, still negative test. I still had the symptoms but thought it could be the result of the cyst, and later went in for another ultrasound on 11/24/2010 to see how the progress of my cyst was. My doctor called on 11/29/10 and let me know that the cyst measured same size but not cancerous, thank God, and he wanted me to start on birth control pills to help regulate my period ( since I had only bled after my IUD removal in September). He wanted me to take one final pregnancy text before I started taking the pills, as he did not see any signs of pregnancy in the ultrasound. I went in that night to pick up my pills and take another test. My results came in that night that I was indeed pregnant. Although I cannot calculate my due date because I never had a LMP, I am excited for my first appointment on 12/9/10.

Hi, I'm new here but I've been searching all over and haven't found many clear answers anywhere. I got the mirena in September of '08 ... my fiancee and I decided that we want to start ttc a few months ago. I called my doctor and made an appointment to have the iud taken out a month ago and a few days after I made the call I got my first period since the day I have my iud put in, I was in so much pain from cramps that I stayed home for a few days from work. I found this strange that I had gone so long without one so I spoke with my doctor about it and she told me this was perfectly normal.. THEN she tried to take the IUD out except it wasnt there.. and we have no idea if it fell out or if its still inside me! Does anyone else know anything about this kind of stuff happening?!? My doctor seemed very calm and just scheduled me an ultrasound in a few weeks... probably just paranoid but this would be my first child soooo... I guess thats why.. Anyway I'd appreciate ANY insight from people who have had similar problems? THANK YOU! and good luck to all~

I has the Mirena IUD for about 3 years and had nothing but problems with it. I finally had it removed 2 1/2 months ago. Last week I felt like I was pregnant so I did a home pregnancy test Sat. that came out positive. I was going to my doctors on Monday morning, but I actually started with heavy bleeding in the morning. They sent me for some blood work that came back saying I was 4 weeks, and they believe that I am mis-carrying. I have to go for more blood work tomorrow morning to see if my levels have dropped at all. I am just so confused and hurt right now. I am also scared to try again if this is going to keep happening. They said if I am indeed having a miscarriage I should wait 3 months before trying again. Has this happened to anyone else?

hello ladies....need some advise....:-( I've had my copper iud since 2001. So my husband and I are decided for a 2nd baby. I had my normal 3 day period in the begining of Sept. I had my iud removed 10/14 (ovulated the week before). Had a bright red w/ huge clotts bleeding for three days. Don't know if I should consider that as my period or not, but had relations a couple of days after my bleeding stopped. Waited two weeks and received a negative test result. Now I've been feeling a little weird in my cervix (a little tingling), peed a little brownish looking blood but nothing on the tissue when I wiped. Don't know if I took the test too soon, if my mind is playing tricks on me or am I a little too desperate?

Hey ladies, i am new to this site and have some questions if anyone can answer for me. Had my iud in for almost 5 yrs. it would have been 5 yrs in june'11. I got it removed on Oct. 18,2010. I started my period on Oct. 17, 2010. It lasted until Oct.22nd. Me and my boyfriend have literally been trying for the last month to get pregnant and today my period came on. my doctor told me that I should have been fertile as soon as I took it out. Do this mean something id wrong or is the any steps that I can take to help me get pregnant sooner? Anyone which any answers please let me know. thank you.

Hi everyone! I have had my paraguard since June2010. The insertion of the IUD was awful!!! It hurt so bad I wish someone had warned me. However I have had no issues since the insertion. What concerns me now is I am having bleeding just recently when I have sex with my husband Has anyone else have these symptoms?

For all those curious out there....I had my mirena removed after 3.5 years and decided to have another kid. I had it removed on Sept. 7, 2010. I did not have a regular period for exactly 4 weeks after removal. I started my "normal" cycle on Oct 5, 2010. I used OPK's and identified I was ovulating on Oct 18-19........got my BFP today on Oct 31, 2010. Happy Halloween!!! I must add that I never "lost" my period with the Mirena. It was lighter, but always showed up every month. I found conceiving after the removal very easy and want to say there is hope for you all!
Good luck to everyone!

Hey ladies! I'm new to this site. I'm 23 and I have a 3 year old son and he is amazing! But now I want to try for another one (a girl would be great!) Anyway, I've had the paragard (copper IUD) for a little over 2 years and have had many complications. Severe cramps, mood swings, heavy bleeding (especially in the beginning) but it served its purpose and for that I am grateful. I removed my IUD on Oct 22 and bled after for a day or so. I was supposed to come on my period yesterday. Have never missed a period EVER except when I became pregnant with my son. I know the exact day I'm supposed to come on because I get tender breast and minor cramping and I usually come on the next day after. I hear you can get pregnant almost immediately after removal so I'm not sure if that's why no period or maybe it's normal to not have one directly after removal, especially since it was so close by. I'm really excited about possible being pregnant though, but I am also a little scared because what if I am unable to conceive!!?? I'll keep you all posted. If I don't come on my period today, I'm going to get an hpt. Wish me luck! ♥Christabelle

Hello all! I have 3 children and they are each 3 1/2 years apart. I am now at the point where I'd usually have my next one (according to my schedule I still have the Mirena, but was wondering if you all have heard if it takes longer to become pregnant after the mirena as opposed to the non hormonal iud???? I am going to make an appt soon to get it taken out I think. Kind of nervous....

I had my IUD in for 2yrs, I just got it removed Oct. 1, the Dr said that I would get my period in two weeks and it's been 3 wks and no period. We are trying to get pregnant again, so we have had unprotected sex several times since I had it removed. I'm having a few pregnancy symptoms, (frequent urination, eating more, fatigue), I've taken a pregnancy test but negative. My husband is also having symptoms (I know funny but true), he was vomiting, eating way more and craving things. I've never actually tried to get pregnant my other 4 were oops. So should I wait until end of month and do another pregnancy test? Not sure when I should get a period so not sure when to test??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello Everyone, I just had my Paraguard IUD removed yesturday after having it in place for a little over 4 years. I of course searched forum after forum reading though horror stories of the pain and discomfort that took place during the removal process. To my suprise it was a quick almost painless procedure. We are hoping to get pregnant soon! It lifts my spirits to read about some getting pregnant right away after having their IUD removed..Good Luck to everyone!

hi! i am new to the site, but need some advise. I had my Mirena removed on September 10 2010, I just got married in May and the husband and I decided to try for one thats "ours" (i have two boys from a previous relationship. I started what seemed to have been a period on the 12th and it lasted until the 17th, and now, on the 30th i REALLY feel pregnant. Do I really have to wait till next week to find out or should I go ahead and take a pg test now? Im very anxious about this, its so different to actually be "trying" versus "accidental. Im afraid my symptoms are resulting from my IUD removal and not pregnancy, but am DEFINATELY hoping for the latter of the two. HELP!!! Im driving myself CRAZY!!!!

@woodsy You may just be late because of having the iud removed. Because the uterus has been tampered with it throws things a little off and your body has to get back on track. I had mine removed on the 10th of September and I ended up ovulating a whole week past when I usually would. The environment of the uterus is different without the iud than with it. The lining was thinned with the iud in. Your body should not be working to "repair" itself for lack of a better term.

Hi. I had my copper IUD removed on Sept 9th after 10 years. I am now 4 days late for my MC. Could I be pregnant? I am not trying and used a spermicide between the 9th and now.

Hello, I had merina iud removed august 17th after having it in for 4 years. My boyfriend and I decided to try and have another baby. While on the merina i never had any periods or problems. It is now September 21st and I still have not had my period and have had 3 negative pregnancy test. The dr told me to wait one more month before she gives me medicine to start my period. I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem too??

So, iv been to my doctor twice in the past 3 months, cus i keep cramping, (I have the marina), and she wont take it out, because "its the best form of birth controll" which im sure it is, but i dont want it cause of the crramping, and I want another child. So I took it out yesterday myself, and spotted just a little bit. How long until I will become pregnant and am I going to be okay by doing this myself???

OK ladies question for you I got my IUD removal on 7/102010 and when I had it removed the OB ask if I had sex within the last 72 hours and I did. She said it is very likely that i could be preggos or could get preggos. Has anyone else heard this??? Also when I heard this I went home and took a O.H.T and it was pos. But I started bleeding like a period, (1st one is 3 years). Just wondering if you think I cold still be preggos?

Hey ladies I'm 31 yrs old w/ 2 toddler boys. I want to try for the girl. I've had the 10 yr IUD in place for 9 mo's now not to mentioned I've NOT stopped menstrating since the day it was inserted last Aug of '09. My dr checked and everything was fine. She said my body had to get used to a foreign object. I'm having it removed this Fri May 14th. I've had enough mentrating. Question is will I be able to Expect again right away or will my body need time to go back to it's "normal" cycle then maybe I can hope to Expect ?? Anyone know or experiance anything similar??

Hello Ladies, I'm 25 already a mother of one baby boy. He's 15 months old. Well I had my IUD removed on Feb.19, 2010. My question is this.... I started bleeding on the 21st to the 22nd... was that my so called "period"? My next question is this... I'm been peeing a lot and been nauseous for almost a week. I took a test yesterday and it was a faint negative... Could I be pregnant? If so great cause my husband is getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan and we wanted another baby!
I need advice on what to do? null

Hi! I have been on the Mirena for almost 3 years and have just had it recently removed. While I was on the mirena I never had a period, and really did not know when ovulation occured. I realized that I had unprotected sex (actually on mirena at the time), 3-5 days before removal. My Dr. put me on Birthcontrol pills the same day of removal of course, but I am wondering if there were sperm still in my system, and could have had conception that same day? Or if thats possible. Seeming that I didn't know when I was ovulating, I was in hopes that it wasn't a fertile day? I had IUD removed and put back on the pills, so I could have a regular period, and be getting ready to have a baby...in the near far away future. LOL. Any answers would be greatly appreciated?

I would encourage all ya that are trying that it will happen. So ladies stay positive and kip doing ya thing.

WOW! Lot's of strange comments here. I have my own story and it's not positive.
The Mirena was suggested to me by my gyno after a year of ridiculous bleeding. I have a couple of fibroids but my doctor said that had nothing to do with my heavy, very long bleeding. Sometimes my periods would last a month. I do have a son but he was born in 2004. I have never done well on the pill and after a new doctor of mine screwed up my prescription, things went from bad to worse. I started getting migraines and was told to stop the pill. So a year later, the mirena. I got it inserted of DEC of 2009. The first month was great..I loved it but then things started to change. I was weak but couldn't sleep, I started gaining weight and as others have posted here, it looked like I was pregnant. By the beginning of April, I had gained 20 lbs. My hair wasn't growing. I have very short hair so it's noticeable when it's growing out. I normally trim every two weeks, it has been 2 months since I needed to trim it. I was getting strange cramping. I also had lost and libido I once had which used to be mighty and strong! I started searching sites for my symptoms and came across numerous sites about IUD's. All the "negative" quotes were the very similar to what I was going through. I made an appointment to talk to my doctor, this was last week. I told her what was going on and she immediately suggested I get it taken out. She told me the she has patients who do very well on the mirena but she has many who have my same issues. Now I'm going through the cramping and passing clots. It's no fun at all but I'll tell you this, I'm back to sleeping like the dead. It's wonderful.
My feeling towards those acting like we've all made this up in our head...shut up. I would rather weigh the worst of what is possible then the best. I did my research and had extensive conversations with my doc, and felt this was worth a try. I tried it and it didn't work, plain and simple.
If I were weighing this simply on BC, I would have never done it, my husband and I are completely fine with condoms and spermicide, this was for medical reasons and it made me feel half dead at 32. Ladies who are thinking about getting it, weigh your options and if your insurance pays for it, I say try it, you might be just fine and if it doesn't work, take it out... If you have to pay for it yourself? I'd think twice unless you don't mind blowing the $300 or so bucks.

i have read so many post on here and honestly I CANT relate to most of you. I had my IUD for just about 5 years. I never had any of the side effects everyone is talking about. I have had migranes since i was 11, I havent had one in years. I LOST weight, due to excersise and eating right. I use to lose my hair but since cutting it all off (I had really long hair) i havent lost anymore. To have it put in I dont remember it hurting like everyone is saying, some slight cramping and thats it. removing it was a piece of cake, no problems at all. I have not had a real period in just about 5 years. All these crazy stories scare people, when in fact they dont happen to everyone. after I have a second baby I will for sure get another one!
My question is about after the removal. I had it removed March 23rd because we want our second child. I had spotting 2 days after for about 2 days. then about 2 weeks later is when everything started to happen. Breast are tender and about a cup bigger, sick to my stomach, overly tired, emotional. All the classic pregnancy symptoms which would be great but 4 negative test. I am suppose to have my period tomorrow and I sure dont feel like its coming. I guess I just want to know if I could be pregnant just a month after having it removed.
jess579 2010-04-17 07:10:19
Oh and to add to my last comment. .....I've also gotten ovarian cysts since I've had the paragard put in and my breasts are sore all the time. with the water retention, and pain (from the cysts) I was afraid I was pregnant so I went to the doc. and that's when I found out it was cysts on my ovaries. CYST?!! I've never had them before! All of that and weight gain, always tired etc!! Damn if I wanted my body to react like i was pregnant I would become pregnant!
jess579 2010-04-17 06:59:18
I've had my IUD paragard in for about a year now. I hate it! I've been gaining weight ever since. I've had three children and this is the heaviest I've ever been, even when I was prego. My body is acting like it's pregnant. I'm nautious , dizzy, my body retains water like it does when I'm pregnant, my legs and ankles are really bad. It's uncomfortable when I make love too. I'm setting up an appointment to get it removed.

Of course my strings are missing and i tryed to let them "fish" it out before going the day surgery route!! I have to say i reached my pain level that day! Ladies there is a whole new meaning to "a little pressure"!!! Anyways my surgery is march 23 and im rather nervous!!! Any insight to the procedure???? Anything?????

Im very new to this im lookin for advice. I got my merina out on feb 9th 2010 because i want baby no 2. i had d coil in for 3 and a half years and have no complaints about it it was super i bleed for the first 6 month after gettin it in but nearly none since. in fact i got my first period in that time on feb 1st this year 9 days before getting coil out. now i still aint got a period which i taught i would but 2days after removal i had slight spottin very red n clumpy and pain when i urinate with nothing since and i have been very moody n very bad sick tummy for 5 days now now i had unprotected sex 2 days before removal. Now i wonder when will i get my period, did i ovulate or could i be pregnant its to early to test i think andno other pregnancy symptoms. my doctor said to be careful that many women get pregnant in the first month so if ya dont want it that soon to use other forms of contraception but did she mean before or after your first period and if so when should the first period return as i cant remember my cycle before the coil.
Would be great if anyone could help.

I Am in NEED of some answers? So if anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated!
1. Who has conceived a boy after having the copper IUD removed? 2. Who has had miscarriages after miscarriages after removing the copper IUD?
I had mine removed in June 2009, waited a month got prego in August, lost it in October and bleed for 3 weeks. Was waiting trying to wait another month but may or may did not get pregnant again in November? But missed a period & tested positive but then started bleeding again one week in dec then again at end of Jan 2010 and have been bleeding since??? Docter has not been too helpful besides testing hormone levels???
If only I would have known that risks of complications after the IUD were this high and even more so it's harder to have a boy!! No way in hell would I have put that foreign object into my body and destoried my births! Anyone please help. Thank you!

Hello All, I am new to this posting site and it looks really interesting and helpful. So my husband and I have decided to have another baby. I am getting the mirena IUD removed March 5 (I believe that is the correct date). Does anyone have any advice for me? I do not know what to expect after it is removed and hoping to conceive pretty fast. I had to have it inserted due to heavy bleeding. Has anyone else had the IUD inserted for heavy bleeding and if so what happened after the IUD was removed? Hope to hear from someone soon.

Hi, I'm new to this site, Well my story is I decided to get the iud removed after me being sick I have dysmenorrhea so i got on birth control at 15 so i could stop getting sick on my cycles i got pregnant on the pill at age 16, had my daughter at 17 3 days later i was on the shot, got off the shot because it gave me excessive weight gain and high blood pressure. Not to mention when i was 15 i started on the patch then pregnant off the pill high blood pressure on the shot now the iud made me nausous all day everyday. So now my doc says my body needs a hormonal break. While on the iud my period came every 2 1/2 mths. So i got my iud taken out jan 20th, me and my husband decided to conceive so I really don't know when to expect my period because it was never normal. So my guess is to wait and see if my period comes this mth and take a test the 1st of march. any pointers...???

hi everyone..hmm..my story..my boyfriend and i are trying to have a baby of our own really bad..he already has one from a previous relationship but wants another with me and i desperately want to have a child as well..had the mirena removed 1/6/10 and two days later 1/8/10 started my period which til now is going..usually i have a pretty regular menstrual cycle..i knew i was going to start on the 8th but usually i end on the fifth day..but the bleeding is still pretty heavy..prior to removal we have had intercourse and all along after...hopefully with all this trying by next month i'll have good news..but from reading all the comments on here..everyone seems to be different and some get preggo quickly after and some do not..i, on the other hand hope to be one of the lucky ones..let's just keep our fingers crossed on that one..to me this would be more of a miracle than anything..this baby if conceived, would literally save my life..right now..everything is up to God, so hopefully He is listening..to everyone out there who is also trying to conceive..good luck on this wonderful, yet, chaotic journey that we have to go through ladies..hope that everyone receives good news sooner rather than later..but a news is a news whenever it does occur..Good luck!!!!!!

Hi everyone, just wanted to share my story I got my IUD removed on 12/7/09, started a very heavy period on 12/10/09 that lasted for 10 days. Had sex on the 21st and the 24th. Found out on Sunday 1/3/10 that I am pregnant. I took 4 different kinds of HPT's. Now I'm worried that I didn't give my body a chance to "recover" before getting pregnant.

I just want to know what happened when you removed it yourself.

My Iud actually fell out last night. I have had it for 2 yrs in Feb.I have had quite a few of the side effects as well...1st, i have never reeally had a "period" on it. it has just been 0o surprise ur period is here, 2 days later it was over...than about a day or two it would be back. Very wierd. And usually everytime after intercourse i would get some kind of period. Hair loss, depression, and moodiness, you name it i prob had it. So for about a week i have felt it slowly coming down and down and then last night it just kind of came out. I called the Dr. and they said no emergency, just make an appt. It didnt even hurt coming out. Me and my husband are thinking about another baby, wondering how fast can i become pregnant. Since my cycle has been out of wack from day one..i really dont know when i am ovulating so is it more likely to get pregnant right away or what is the best advice? Not sure. Thanks!

Hi everyone. I'm new to this. I was wondering if anyone can answer me. My last MP was 10/13 and I had my IUD (Paragard) removed the 27th. We had intercourse that same night! I calculated to ovulate that same day too! Now, my MP didnt come today...and I've taken 3 tests last week that all said negative. I also took one today and it still said negative. What are the chances I could still be pegnant?? Anyone?

I have had the Copper IUD for almost 4 years. It has no hormones so I still have a short period, mild cramps, and mild mood swings. But I have lost almost 70 lbs since I have been on it. I still get monthly cravings around my period, but I had to learn to control them. While I was on the Depo shot I gained 65 lbs in 9 months and had difficulties getting pregnant. It took me almost 4 years to get pregnant with my daughter! So I learned that I could not use hormone-type birth control. I talked it over with my Dr, and he suggested the hormone free IUD, and I have been grateful ever since. I am getting ready to have it removed, but have every intention of getting the same one after baby #2 (God willing)!

Hello ladies. I am 22 and have a 2 year old. I have had the IUD for about a year and a half with almost no problems. My husband and I thought it was a good idea and since my memory wasnt good enought for the pill, we decided on the IUD. I have been on many sites and I am finding that many women have cramping or pain as a result of this IUD. I must say I enjoy its effectiveness BUT, I have gained 70 lbs in the last year and a half. null At first I thought It was "baby weight" but it was coming rapidly. 5-10 pounds a month. I am tall and before my baby was born I was 165lbs. But because I am 5' 10'' that was fine. I was in a size 9-10. After my baby was born I gained 15 lbs from the birth, but now I am 240. I have a membership at 24 hour fitness and I played basketball and softball in college so I always stay active. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced horrible weight gain. I have an appointment to have the IUD removed but my doctor keeps making me feel as though its my fault. my diet isnt to bad, nothing different than what I was eating before and during the pregnatcy. The doctor Says it does not contain hormones that would make me gain.
Someone please talk to me... signed... to heavy.

I just got done reading all of the comments left by the others. I came looking for information on hormones and IUD removals. I have to give my story. In April 05, I had the Marina inserted. I was looking for a BC method that would be easy... no pills, no shots. So this looked like the best answer. Once the inital day of cramping was over, it was the best thing I did. The first 6 months i only spotted and then after that I never had a period. I loved it when I went to the MDs office and they asked when my last cycle was and I always told them a few years ago. My hormones leveled off. No mood swings, no weight gains, and no pms to boot. I can honestly say it was the best method that i had tried. Earlier this month, it was time to have it removed. My husband and I have been waiting and planning this for some time, wanting to get pregnant. Removal was a piece of cake, no pain just a little pinch. After about a month, im starting to notice that my hormones are all out of wack. I used to have mood swings as a teenager and they are back full force. I am very lucky to have a man that is willing to put up with a lot from me.

Like many others, I am so glad to have found this site with so many other women reporting similar issue as I. At least I know that it is the product and not me, or my boyfriend for that matter. Since getting the IUD I have had many problems ranging from minor to severe. I was on my period for about 4 months after getting this IUD. It was heavy at first, but then I continued to spot for the next three months afterward. My doctor said that this was to be perceived as more of a nuisance than a health concern, so I dealt with it and kept my IUD. Later, I saw a new doctor and during my regular exam she had found that my IUD string had gotten sucked up into my uterus. Now I know that whenever I do decide to get it removed (which, at this point the lack of string is the only thing holding me back) it is going to be very painful and the procedure will last longer. My periods then became very infrequent. I would have one every three months or so. Now, after having it close to three years, my periods are very regular. I get them every 6 weeks or so, yet they last for almost 2 weeks or longer. On top of all of this, I get a yeast infection every month. This has been going on for a little over a year now. I talked to a nurse practitioner who specializes in this area and she said that this is uncommon and it can be treated by using a low dosage yeast infection cream one dose per week for a couple months. However, once I stopped using the cream they just came back again. She suggested that I may just be "allergic" to my partner. Now, thanks to this site and hearing many similar stories I know that this evil IUD (which has also caused me to gain weight and experience crazy cystic acne, which I've never had a problem with before and I'm 23) just needs to come out. Pain or no pain, constant yeast infections not only are a nuisance but can't be good for me in the long run anyway. Other than the low maintenance bit, this IUD has been nothing but trouble and so not worth it. I'd rather take a pill everyday.

Hi everyone, I'm a bit worried as I had my Mirena coil in for 5 years with no probems at all...I thought it was the best thing I had ever done. I have 2 children aged 11 and 6 and got the mirena removed on the 3rd Nov 08, nearly 5 months ago....within a couple of days I had a day or 2 of very light bleeding or spotting and then on the 26th of December I bleed for 6 days with constant cramps and it was really really really heavy if you know what I mean. My husband and myself decided to try for another child in January, but to no avail I haven't got a period for January, February or March. I have tried dozens of pregnancy tests as I keep getting cramps in my stomach, tender breast, and feeling sick etc...all the right signs but all the tests are negative. I don't know why I'm not getting any periods, I'm taking folic acid and multi vitamins, I'm eating really healthy and excercising, I don't smoke and I rarely drink alcohol and I'm only 30 years of age. I really don't know what is wrong and I'm afraid to go to the doctor in fear she is going to tell me something really horrible is wrong with me and we can't have any more kids....which I know is really stupid and I'm working myself into a frenzy. Any advice would be much appreciated!!!!!

well, i had mine removed on monday march 2nd 2009. I had my mirena removed because i was in constant pain. I heard that cleansing your body with natural herbs helps heal you quicker. taking natural aloe( not the pills) does help. I had such bad cramps after sex when i had the mirena, that i think not having it is a blessing. this device made me gain weight and get acne. i went through puberty pimples free. I am now 22 and I hope I havent screwed my chances of reproducing.

I had my IUD Mirena removed on 2.11.09 and started spotting on 2.13.09. I had it for 2.5 years and it was a piece of cake to get it removed. My husband has been wanting another baby and I want to surprise him! We've been trying every night since it was removed but my doc said to take a pregnancy test if I don't get my period in 2 weeks. I'm still spotting...Will keep you posted!
