An intrauterine (IUD) has become one of the most popular method of birth control due to its advantages and a few side-effects and complications. It has its effiency, reliability and comfort. Since it can be used for many years, an IUD is much cheaper method of contraception compared to other available ones.
Advantages of IUD
First of all it is a device of high efficiency in protecting from pregnancy. It has the effectiveness of 99% if inserted properly. An IUD becomes effective from the moment of its insertion into the uterus. In addition it provides continuous protection from pregnancy for five or twelve years, depending on the type of a device. It is especially comfortable to women, who do not have to care about birth control every time they have sexual intercourse. Once inserted into the uterus, an IUD cannot be felt by a woman or her partner, therefore gives no inconveniences during sexual intercourse. Women, who do not wish to use a hormonal method of contraception, can choose a copper containing intrauterine device that is as effective as the one releasing hormones. Also it is very convenient to breast-feeding women since the device does not interfere with this period and is totally safe both for a woman and her baby.
A hormone releasing type of intrauterine device also make women’s period bleeding lighter and shorter. It is also said to reduce muscle cramps during menstrual period. In addition, a copper containing intrauterine device can be used as a method of emergency contraception. It is claimed to have the efficiency of 99% if used within five days of vaginal intercourse.
Complications of intrauterine device
As with all methods of contraception there are a few side effects and complications associated with the use of an intrauterine device. A copper containing intrauterine device can cause a harder and more intense bleeding during menstrual period. Although rarely, but to some women this could cause anemia. Additionally, this type of an intrauterine device my cause spotting and more painful muscle cramps during period. A hormone releasing intrauterine device may have the same side effects as a birth control pill, since its side effects are associated with the release of hormones. Although insertion of an IUD is most frequently painless, some women claim it to be painful.
Complications associated with the use of an intrauterine device are said to be rare but possible, therefore women should be aware of all possible complications before choosing this method of birth control. There is a risk of 0.003% of the puncture of the uterus during insertion of an IUD. Usually this complication is noticed by a gynecologist right away. Women should be aware that there is a possibility that an IUD could fell out of the uterus. Usually 7 out of a hundred women using this form of contraception experience the expulsion of an intrauterine device within the first year or the first month after insertion of an IUD . If a woman does not notice it she can become pregnant since she is fertile straight away after the expulsion.
Another complication that is rather rare but still can occur is an infection since normal bacteria of the vagina can get into the uterus during insertion of an IUD and cause a uterine infection. Most infections can be cured with antibiotics but some may need surgical therapy leaving a woman sterile afterwards. There is also a higher risk for inflammatory pelvic disease.
And finally another condition that needs additional attention is an IUD and pregnancy. If a woman becomes pregnant with a uterine device present in her uterus there is a higher risk for ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, inflammatory pelvic disease and preterm labor. If a woman becomes pregnant with an IUD present, this device should be taken out by a gynecologist.

I am 29 years old and I had used BC pills for about 12 years and recently started experiencing a lot of hormonal side effects. In talking with my Gyno I decided that ParaGard was a good option for me. I have not had any children, and I must admit that the disclaimer of "mild cramping" with insertion is a bit underplayed. I have a pretty high tolerance to pain, and I could have worked through the cramping aspect of the insertion, but the simultaneous wave of nausea and the hot flashes caught me off guard. The actual insertion took seconds but I had to sit in the dr.s office for about a half our to recover from the almost fainting spell that I had. Since then I have experienced a bit of extra bleeding with my period, but it wasn't anything over the top. For those of you looking to get this type of IUD, please don't freak over all of the horror stories on the site. I will caution you to prepare for the severe cramping and the simultaneous urge to vomit, but if you're ready for it I think you can make it through.

I have been reading on here on what everyone has posted,I have had my IUD for 1 year and 3 mths I had it put in,in mexico,The first month I bleed 2 times in one month, the dr there said it was normal my body getting used to it,then the back pain started And I have NEVER had back pain. Then when i came back to the U.S. It got worse and I went to have a pap and get it moved they couldnt get it out cause the string was to short,so they sent me to a OBYGN,he told me that all the pain's and heavy bleeding,2 times a month HAD NOTHING to do with the IUD,so he wouldnt remove it. I asked him point blank if all this bleeding and these pains could stop me from getting prego agine and he told me NO,after reading all this I am thinking he Is Full of it. I guess I am going to find another Ob and see what he says, thanks For all the info i have read on here,And I WARN ANYONE thinking about this DONT DO IT!!

I have read some horrible things about the IUD on many message boards, but I want to find if there is anyone out there that has a baby while on the mirena IUD. I Have had my IUD since feb 2007 and in Oct found out I was pregnant. they were unable to remove the IUD as the strings had migrated into the uterus. they attempted to take it out in the OR when I was 7 weeks pregnant without any luck. I am now 27 weeks pregnant with my third girl. So far everything on ultrasound has shown her growing and developing normal. This has been an emotional rollercoaster. Is there anyone out there that has gone through the same situation.

Over the last 3-4 years I have been officially battling endometriosis. I say officially because that's when someone would finally diagnos me correctly. I've tried many different birth controls, I've now had 2 surgeries and a shot treatment. The day after Thanksgiving of 07 I had my second surgery and at that time went ahead and put in my first IUD. The minera....now I can't say too much about the depression and anxiety b/c I pretty much already had that with all the other crap I was going through. Right now I'm having so many problems, but I don't know if it's still my endometriosis, if maybe my doctor left something in my body during surgery, or if maybe the IUD isn't inserted correctly. I brought this issue up with my doctor and he said he's never had any complaints before so he didn't think that was it. After reading all of your comments, it's starting to take its toll. I'm scheduled in February to do a colonoscopy to make sure the endometriosis hasn't spread to my bowel. I've been asking my obgyn to give me an ultrasound to check on the IUD, but he says it won't show him anything. I constantly have sharp pains in my left ovary, to the point of tears. My left lower back has constant pain as well, and this isn't including the normal lower back pain I have from endometriosis. I've learned that that's not going away so I just constantly feel a numbing pain. But this new pain shoots down my leg, and I can take pills, and lay on my heat pad but it doesn't go away. I'm so angry and irritated. My boyfriends sister had the same problems and I still tried to tell my doctor, and he didn't seem to want to listen. I've scheduled an appointment for a new doc at the end of this month in hopes that they can help me. I think I'm just going to get this thing taken out. I thought it would help me b/c there are a lot of times that I forget to take my pills. I hate pills, even small bcp. But I'm going to have to suck it up if it will help me.

WARNING !!! WARNING !!! WARNING!!! : Please read this warning before you think about having a Mirena IUD insterted! I had my IUD inserted Nov 2006, 11 months ago. Since then I have had many complications. I was rushed to the emergeny room twice with a severe kindney infections and severe pain in my lower back ( I though I was passing a kidney stone it was sooo severe!) I have also had ovarian and uteriune pain as well as have experienced 25 lb weight gain and severe anxiety and suicidal depression. I recently had a pelvic ultrasound and CAT scan and these showed not kidney stones or irregulaities with my ovaries or uterus. I have also had terrible shooting pains that go down into my legs also. Making it painful to sit stand or even sleep at night. Also saw increased dark facial hair growing and my face and neck and chest broke out in acne for several months. And decreased libido! I had my IUD removed in my Dr's office today and within minutes felt relief !!!!! I pray that I am now on the road to recovery!!!! Please Please think twice before having this done. I had never had any problems with my periods before this. I had been on the pill on and off for many years and was just tired of taking it and thought that this may be a good alternative for me since I am age 39 now. If this message can help anyone else from experiencing this misery I hope it helps!!!

I had my Mirena IUD in since August 2003, got it out Sept.19, 2007. I got a 5 day period 2 days after, and now I have a period again today, October 12, 2007. I have been trying methods for a boy, no pregnancy that I know of yet. I will note that I had NO complications with the Mirena. I plan to get it again once I am done having children.

1st Mirena fine. 2nd Mirena horrible. Hi. This is my second mirena. Got the first one as soon as I had my first kid. Had it for a couple of years with no problems I thought. Except I got ovarian cysts. Other than that no problems. The spotting went away in a couple of months after that no periods! I took it out. Decided not to have a kid. Separated, worked on getting divorced. Got a second mirena and the first day I got it I was crying non stop. That crying at the drop of a pin, has not stopped in 7 months. my doctor insists that it is not the cause. I called a different doctor and will have mirena removed. All I do is cry, worry, it is too much. NOt to mention that I spot after intercourse and feel bloated and the cysts are there. my obgyn gave me birth control pills for the cysts. so now I have mirena for b.c., pills for cysts, and next what? anti depressants? I am going to try to take away all the excess hormones, see what happens.

woops...i pressed enter too soon. I also found cramping after I ate on occassion. I have noticed I am having more digestive problems lately too and my boyfriend says he can feel the IUD during sex. I have seen 2 GPs and 2 ER docs and they all say its fine but im fed up with it. I am planning on getting my IUD out as soon as i get my period (my doc says this is the best time to do it) but im afraid the pain of getting it taken out will be worse than getting it put in. Was it as painful? Also, what happens if you get pregnant with an IUD in? What are the chances of that? Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.

I have had a Menira copper IUD in for almost a year and my quality of life since then has been decreased. I have perma PMS, pain shooting down my legs and severe cramping 1-2 weeks before and during my period. I also noticed really bad cramping an hour or so after

Heads up! I had the iud inserted in 03/06. Spotting for a few months like expected, no major weight gain (like depo shot previously gave) and i figured it was the best thing since sliced bread. I have always been blessed with a great complexion. An occasional break out with my period or in higher stress times. We had just relocated from california to New Mexico, bought a home, I resigned from my position and etc...I broke out and figured it was stress. THE BREAKING OUT DID NOT STOP! I HAD FULL BLOWN ACNE EVERYWHERE!! The acne caused more stress, depression, anxiety, and was so gross. I went to doctors 3 times then a specialist. All doctors were aware I had the insert but mentioned nothing of that being a side effect. I have scars, blemishes, bumps, cysts and scabs. I've been devastated for 1 year. As I was sitting in the waiting room for my annual , I ran across a pamphlet on merina. It was different than the one I received when I had it inserted . There it said acne is a possible side effect. BINGO. I had it pulled that day. Its been 1 week since it has been removed and my skin is not flawless my any means, but I have improved so much in the week. What break out was active is still healing but NO NEW cysts, or huge pimples have formed. I feel better, I have better color and am so grateful its out. The doctor said that people with acne prone skin may break out more than normal. He tried to persuade me to keep it and get on acutane. I will never go back to this doctor again, he must be paid real well to push this on people. Trust me, my skin was amazing before. After the insert, I am a perfect example of an adult with severe acne.

After reading everyones comments on their horrible experiences with mirena, I wanted to share my experience because I have had very few issues with mine. I got my iud inserted a little over a month after I had my second son. I had it inserted on Aug. 22, 2006. I can say that it was pretty painful, but it only took a few minutes and then it was over. I had a few migraines here and there, but other than that I have had no problems. I started out with a few normal periods, then really light periods, now I haven't had a period in about 2 months. I'm not pregnant, just lucky. I have friends who have both copper and mirena iud's and they have had no problems as well. For those of you who are interested and got freaked out by all the comments on here, every persons body is different. I know it sounds scary as far as what some of these people have went through, but my experience has been great. I just wanted to let people know that there are people out there who have been ok with it

I had the iud inserted in January. It hurt putting it in which took a whole 2 minutes. I had cramping that night and some the next day but that is all. I have had no problems knock on wood! I've never had children and they say it's harder when you haven't. Anyone thinking about it I say go for it! Good luck.

okay, so where to start... if you want an iud read my unusualrareunique situation. grrrrrrr....... so i got the iud because the pill doesnt work with me.... lucky me right? so hooray, i get this wonderful device that was hell to put in.... worse than labor (i dont do pain) well anyway.... time passes. i have never felt my strings, been checked about 3 times in the past year because of this always told everything fine just that my strings were a lil bit short. hmmmmm. allright i guess. so now, i find out im pregnant. on sono no sighn of iud.. i plead for x-ray. wow, there it is, somewhere it shouldnt be, who knows where. another sono, appears behind uterus. again another sono and appears above babies head. grrrrr. no dr will remove iud as long as pregnant so have to get termination. dr does not want to do termination because i have iud. so here i am, termination complete and iud still somewhere lurking in me, again more tests are needing to be run to figure out where this thing is. been told i am rare case but reading these comments i dont feel so rare. any suggestions please comment back.
SINCERELY, LOST AND CONFUSED

Guest 2007-01-20 06:27:10
i had the merina put in june 2006 and i have been having a discharge every since. i went back to my gyn doctor and she told me it was normal, which i got a second opinion. i was checked and had a bacterial infection and was given antibotics. that still didn't help, because the discharge didn't clear all the way up. therefore, i had the merina removed today 1-19-07.i even had pain during intercourse.has anyone had similar complications?

It like I have no deffense. Calling doc to get some answers, I can't live like this.

I have my Mirena coil fitted last year when i was diagnosed with PCOS and finally had it taken out yesterday as me and my husband have now decided we would like to start a family. I had the Mirena inserted under general anesthetic as i hadn't had any previous children and was told it would hurt more because of this, for the first month i experienced heavy bleeding and bad stomach cramps but after that time it was perfect, my periods stopped and i had no stomach pains whatsoever. I just hope that we can conceive easily but apparently it can take a year for everything to return back to normal. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! x

I had the coil fitted on 18th December since then I have had constant pain and bleeding, lots of clots and a horrible brown discharge...is this normal. I had the coil fitted as I have been diagnosed with fibroids and also suffer from extremley heavy periods, cant even think about having sex. I'm seeing my Dr this afternoon to see if she will remove it.

Until now everyone I had spoken to said that they had no issues with mirena IUD. I on the other hand have had some major issues. And until now I never thought about mirena being the cause. I've had the Mirena IUD going on 4mon. I have been extremely moody, snapping at my husband constantly. My husband treats me like a princess, but yet I want a divorce. I have been having anxiety attacks and have not been able to sleep well. Everyone around me has noticed the difference in my mood. This is NOT ME and now that I know other women are going through the same thing I am having the damn thing removed. I also have had several infections since I have had it, I believe Mirena is the cause of this as well. Also I have been really dizzy, almost falling with my son in my arms. I think Mirena just isnt for me. I am very worried about the infections I have been getting! I want more children one day and if I can no longer bare children because of this Mirena IUD, I will definately contemplate taking out a lawsuit against them. Has anyone else had these problems???

Around November 30th I decided to get the Copper IUD (no hormone) inserted. There were no complications during the insertion (which took roughly 45 minutes). I was placed on an antibiotic to ensure that I wouldn't get an infection that could create problems. After 14 days I went in to see my doctor for a follow-up and everything tested fine.
I've had it in for about a one month now. Since the insertion of the Copper IUD, I’ve been getting cramps daily that usually last roughly 2 minutes each; they're hours apart and usually amount to 4 a day. I’m just a bit worried that this will continue. Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, what was the solution or diagnosis?

I have had a Mirena IUD for about 4 months. It was very hard for me to weigh the benefits and down sides of the copper vs. minera/hormone based IUD. My previous history with oral bc was very unpleasant, and I had sworn off hormonal bc. Hoping for some real life advice, I found this forum, which all but scared me away from Minera. My ob-gyn talked to me at length however, and I changed my mind. I am glad that I did. Obviously each person's experience is different, but I think the worse ones are more likely to be elaborated on. So, if anyone is looking for a more "average" experience; I had cramping (manageable with IB) for the first few days, light spotting/ minor cramps for the first several weeks. My periods now occur >28 days and are very light, sometimes I have slight breast tenderness. I have not noticed weight gain or tendency for weight to occur in different places. I have noticed that my complexion is not as clear as it was, but I can't say how much of this is related to Minera. The nicest part of it is that my moods seem to be fairly unaffected and I feel like "myself" ( my partner hasn't noticed negative mood effects either). Like I mentioned, its different for everyone, but I am generally quite pleased. Hope this is helpful.

I got my first IUD 5 years ago after the birth of my second child. I had about a year of really bad postpardum depression, or so I thought. I had it removed in July of this year to try for another baby - well I changed my mind and had my second Marina IUD inserted again 3 weeks ago. I HAVE NOT BEEN MYSELF EVER SINCE. I CAN'T SLEEP, I CANT EAT, I WANT TO DIVORCE MY LOVING HUSBAND, AND I HAVE HAD SUICIDAL THOUGHTS!!! I am crying all the time, and I can't think straight. I talked to my doctor and HE said that it doesen't have anything to do with the IUD. After reading these posts I call BS and I am getting it removed as soon as possible. I have a great job, loving family, and no reason to want to kill myself. Just a warning!!! If you feel this way, you are not alone!!!

An update on my post on 10/5/06 re: missing strings.
I have since been able to locate the strings. They were cut very short, so I can just barely feel the ends. I'm in my third month and my pd seems to be getting back to what it was pre iud. I was considering having it removed and getting a new one with longer strings, but since I now can feel the strings with some major effort and I have no pain or other problems, I will be keeping it after all.

I have had the Merina for about 2 years now and had not exprienced any probs, in fact i have been recommending it to friends, I always had bad reactions to pills and contraceptive injections before so was wary of the coil and didn't feel right about something being permanantly in your body. Lately though i have been experiencing some hair loss and seem to bleed after sex ocassionaly but this may be more down to the fact that I cant tell when my period is anymore and timing is wrong. Has anyone else experienced bleeding after sex??

Ive had the copper coil for a year now, and today i went to get the mirena one inserted. I have had one baby and thought it would be all ok. It wasnt though it was so painful, i was literally screaming. After about 10 minutes the doctor called another one in and i was bleeding. The doctor couldnt insert because my cervix wouldnt open. I am now going back in a months time and im really scared. Does anyone know any thing that will help, all why this has happend to me?

WARNING, WARNING, WARNING - MIRENA COIL Ladies do your homework first. I had the mirena coil fitted in Jan this year. I was told the hormone progesterin would be localised but it does in fact get into the blood stream. I am 48, have a wonderful husband, three lovely boys almost grown up and a lovely house so why would I want to attempt SUICIDE TWICE. Yes I am not without stress in my life but who isn't. My husband and friend noticed my mood changes, the constant tiredness and fatigue and the loss of interest in anything and anyone. Then the sleeplessness arrived along with severe panic attacks which started at 3.15 every morning until I went to sleep. Confused and frightened I sought help from my doctor, not once but three times, and each time he upped my dose of anti-depressants, gave me sleeping tablets and beta blockers, none of which worked. After my first suicide attempt , I contracted a bladder infection (twice) . It was only after my friend suggested that the coil might be the cause that I surfed the net. I was horrified to hear so many negative comments regarding mood swings that I decided to have it removed. Within a week of it being removed I was almost back to normal. I am now trying to wean myself off beta blockers and anti-depressants. Not fun. IF YOU SUFFER FROM LOW MOODS OR EVER HAD DEPRESSION, THE MIRENA COIL IS DEFINITELY NOT FOR YOU.. I INTEND TO TAKE THIS UP WITH MY SURGERY TO ENSURE THAT ANYONE CONTEMPLATING THE MIRENA COIL IS WARNED OF THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS.

I came upon this site trying to see if anyone has gotten pregnant on the Merina IUD. It is so wild that half of you on here have experienced the same symptoms as I have. Panic Attacks, Depression, and Anxiety, I thought I was just tripping. I have a wonderful husband that treats me like a QUEEN, so why have I wanted to divorce him (crazy), three wonderful boys, so I ask why am I always irritable and depressed. You would think I have a horrible home life but to the contrary, it is wonderful; we're blessed. Reading all of the comments; the discharge, panic attacks, pain during intercouse, it's coming clearer. It just may be due to the Merina IUD, calling right now to make an appointment to have it taken out. Thanks ladies, good to know I'm not the only one on this boat.

I had the Mirena coil for 2 years and suffered no cramps and had almost no periods which was great. Unfortunately since the coil was inserted I had to endure heavy discharge with a very offensive ''fishy'' smell. Got rid of it with antibiotics but kept coming back all the time. I had never had this problem before and haven't had it since I had the coil taken out.

i had a copper coil fitted about 4 months ago now, it was extremely painful! i nearly passed out. i cant use any hormonal contraceptions so i thought this would be the best thing to do. before i had it done i wish someone had told me i could have had some pain relief. ive never had any children so i think this made it even more painful. i was bleeding for about 3 weeks after and the periods have been a lot more painful since except my last period was a bit better, i also get spotting between periods. have had thrush as well. one thing that is really bothering me though, i didnt know wheither to blame it on the coil but ive noticed ive been getting very anxious all the time. i dont know if pmt is suppose to get worse because of the build up before the period and the bleeding is for longer. i went to the doctors today and i explained to him how ive been feeling and he said it sounds like im having panic attacks. have this happened to anyone else since having a coil fitted? i would really like to know.

i had a minera coil put in yesterday, i got a local anesthetic injection to numb my cervix then got the coil inserted ( both were very sore) i was told to expct sore cramping in my abdomen or back but i havent so far, i have been experiencing small sharp pains in the tops of my legs & chest...am i just 1 of the lucky ones or is the cramping still to come?

I had the marina coil inserted in April this year. Had regular periods-light-right up until july 12th last period. Been to the doctor last week because I was nausaus, bloated, sore nipples and acnefied, he carried out a pregnancy test which was negative, then precede to tell me he was sending me for a scan because the test wasn't 100% - how reassuring. Still waiting on scan date, if I'm not pregnant I will be asking them to take it out, I can't live with the uncertainty every month!!

I have had the copper (non hormomal) iud in now for almost 2 years. It is great overall apart from longer periods. I was interested to read some comments about much worse PMT. I have also experienced this but my Dr has said there is no research based evidence of the copper coil doing this. However i am sure my PMT which i never really suffered from before has become really severe and long lasting starting 7-10 days b4 my period. As i cant tolerate hormonal methods or preogesterone (which is in the Mirena albeit in very small doses) it is still the best one (i think) so far. I have just started taking herbal remedies to try and alleviate thie PMT and i'll see how it goes!

I got my Paraguard about 5 weeks ago. Insertion was uncomfortable but nothing like the horror stories I've read. My first period was a little heavier than normal but no discomfort. I went for my follow-up appointment yesterday and found that my strings have been "sucked up" into my cervix. My Gyn says this is normal. The only way I can check it is if I get an ultrasound every few months. I'm thinking about having it removed. A tip for anyone considering getting an iud--ask your gyn to cut the strings long.

I had a Minera put in a little over a week ago. Slight pain, but not anything an Advil wouldn't take away. I went right back to work and even worked out that night. I haven't expereinced any unusual spotting, bloating or headaches. I feel pretty normal. I took various forms of the pill for the last 14 years and just had enough with the large amounts of hormones. I understand the IUD's horomones are localized and very little enter your blood stream. As for sex.. no problems here

I had my copper T inserted at the age of 21, and before I have had any children. I have had it for about 4 years now, as Hormonal contraceptives play havock with my blood pressure and condoms give me thrush so bad I can't bear them. It did hurt to have it inserted, but that was mainly the local anethestic, and I had cramp for a couple of days after. I have not really had any major problems with it. Every now and again, I have a really heavy and long period, and infrequently have bad stomach cramps, but not so painful that I cannot go to work. I have gained a bit of weight, but I think thats because I don't do enough exercise more than anything else. Mood swings are also infrequent - however when i do have them, they are bad, my boyfriend can sense them coming and braces himself for the week - However I cannot pin this directly to the coil either. For me this is the only form of contraception I can safely use. However I am not looking forward to having it taken out when I decide the time is right to have children, but that's because I'm scared it will hurt. My advice to people reading this site, looking for information, is that you must make this decision for yourself, get all the information you can - your GP / GynOb will be the best place to go to get this. There are a lot of horror stories out there, but equally there are a lot of success stories too. At the end of the day, you have to do whats right for you.

Hi I had my marina coil removed yesterday after having it in only 4 months, this was due to really bad stomach pains in the lower left side of my stomach, pains during sex, also that fact my partner could feel it everytime we had sex. I went to the doctors who have refered me to the hospital to have a scan to check for ovarian cyst(as this is a side affect that can happen). When I had it removed doctor said the coil itself looks fine, she also gave me 2 different types of antibiotics to take, (not too sure why though) she didn't really explain just said it was with it being removed. If any one has had a similar experience could they contact me just so I kow its normal.
Thanks in advance

I got the paraguard inserted around april or may of this year....i went for my ultrasound a week after i had it put in to see if it was ok and they said that it wasn't high enough..anyway i had to come back in june to get it taken out and another one put in...this time when i got the ultrasound done a week later she said it was in a great spot and looked great.....it is now september and for the past week i have had severe pain in my pelvic region and it hasmoved to my abdomin.....i just went to my obgyn because iwas just fed up with the iud and worried about it soi wanted it removed...she just did and exam and she said she can'tfind it..she searched throughy and no luck..she said it either fell out(which i dont think) or it is lodged somewhere in my body..i have togo get an ultrasound tomorrow to see whats wrong...I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but anyone thinking of getting an iud please be careful and educate yourself on it before hand.

I had the Mirena iud inserted 6 months ago. It was very painful!! Now I am having leg pain, headaches, no energy, very moody. I just don't feel like myself anymore. I am going to have it removed as soon as possible.

nullMIRENA I had the Mirena inserted 1 week ago and have had extremely bad pain in the abdomen even with pain killers it doesn't go away had it put in with no pain relief and couldn't believe how much pain I was in the rest of that day. The pain is always there some days it does not come on until later in the morning but then it doesn't go away no matter what. Have been back to see gyno and she said it looks like it is in the right position. sent me for untrasound and I go back on Monday for results. Radialogists kept asking me if I had pain on the left side. All I know is the pain wasn't there before it went in and now I am living in constant pain to the point that it is affecting my working ability. Has anyone else had this problem. I cant stand it.

I had my Mirena inserted one year ago. My periods are much lighter and I only get occasssional cramping which subsides dramatically when I take a Primrose Oil and Omega Supplement. I have not gained any weight and I am happy to say that in the lasty year I have actually LOST weight!!!
Guest 2006-09-14 13:09:09
Hi, I had the mirena coil fitted in march this year as my periods were so painful and heavy. Having it fitted wasnt too painful but i had bad stomach cramps afterwards for a couple of days. The period which followed was heavy and long and i got rid of it after around three weeks. Since then i have had continuous spotting and am lucky to have one clear week out of four! The whole experience of having to continually wear some form of protection is getting me down. The only good thing is the fact that when i do start a period the painful stomach cramps are virtually non existent. I havent noticed any weight gain as such, just my normal yo-yo ! I am feelin quite low and fed up but i think this situation is to blame. I am going to speak to my gp today for some advice as i really am considering having it removed. Has anyone else had an ongoing problem with spotting for such a long time?

I have had my IUD for ten months or so. I don't have children and i'm 31. Insertion was so painful - take a friend and some tissues if you decide to do this, also painkillers taken before. My doctor made out it was a 'blip' of pain, but what would he know about it! Anyway i'm increasingly experiencing full on PMT every month. Literally for the past 3 months i've tried to leave my boyfriend! and this month it looks like it's worked! i'm gutted as I now truely believe it's down to PMT. Has anyone had it this bad? there's very little/nothing medically to back up IUD causing severe PMT???
Guest 2006-09-06 17:46:03
I had an IUD (copper one) fitted yesterday, as i find the hormones in pills effect me really badly- moodiness, tiredness and loss of sex drive. I have experienced really bad cramping and it feels like my womb is being stretched upwards. I am wondering if the IUD is too big for my womb. I am very worried about not being able to conceive after leavng it in for what i have been planning as about 2 years. I have 1 child and am definatley wanting another, just not yet. Worried about it affecting the scar tissue in the uterus- and therefore affecting the chances of a baby implanting into it. Thinking of taking it out now after reading that and everyone elses troubles/worries.

Ihave had my IUD for 6wks now,I got my period as normal although it was lighter than usual, but i have been lightly bleeding for 15days now.Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

I've had my IUD (w/out hormones) for almost 2.5 years now. I had it put in after my second son was born. I never got the cramps, don't have a period. I do get a few bad headaches a month, I also have backpain. Weight goes up and down. Never really thought much about it, till I started reading the site. I only came to the site, because I've been having problems with a discharge, I noticed one other person mentioned it, but nothing else has been said. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't know if it's something to be concerned about?

I had the Mirena inserted Nov. 05 I have gained about 20 lb and have had an ongoing battle with bacterial infection ever sense. I never had this before. My doc said we will try a few thing to get rid of it if it doen't work we will remove it and have it tested for bacteria. When it was inserted I spotted everyday for 3 months, now I don't have any period at all. I am 33 years old and a mother of 3. If I could just get rid of this bacterial infection it would be great. If anyone can help let me know.

Hi I have had the copper coil in for one year now and I am having it removed next week. I have really heavy periods, terrible cramps and terrible PMT. Been to the Dotors and he swears this would not happen with copper coil, I beg to differ. He has reccommneded me to swap to Mirena to help my mood swings but reading above I think this is bad idea. He swears i will not put weight on with Mirena, is this true? also I have lost thick white guey discharge and some sexual positions are painful and I have never had so many spots in my life, my advice to you, don't have any coil fitted, bad idea, After reading this deffinatelly having removed next week and can't wait, thanks girls!!

After suffering from entrometiosis I was advised that the merina coil was my last option before major surgery,so I went to the hospital 12 weeks ago to have it fit .It wasnt being done by my consultant but by another gynecologist. It was a very painfull experience . after a while of her trying I was told she couldnt manage to fit it. she told me not to worry as this can happen. she then told me she would book me in to have it done under a general. So I agreed to this. four weeks after I was admitted. A ten min procedure ended up three and a half hours!! they had punctured my uterus. I went back to see my consultant 2 weeks ago who said the next step was to have a hystorectomy or to try and fit the the coil for a 3rd time. I wasnt sure about having a hysterectomy so decided to be brave and go for the coil again as it was my consultant that was doing it. I spent two weeks wondering if I had made the right decision. I have got two wonderfull children and have no plans in the forseable future to have any more.So I went last week for a 3rd attempt once again it was unsuccesfull. Damage has been done either the first or second attemp!! i have to go back to theatre to see what damage has been done. if it is pos he will fit the coil if not do a hysterectomy. but I am going to tell them I dont want the coil anymore . I was unsure the first time I wish that I had followed my gut feelings then as all this wouldnt have happened . Guess I am just one of the very unlucky ones or mad ones!! my advice would be to think carefully and follow your instincts .

I had the Merina a couple of years ago. I felt great no moodiness no cramping rarely got my period- lost wt- felt better then I had in years. Then I got it removed because I was feeling like I wanted more children but then decided the time wasn't right. After getting it removed - back with the period- back with the moodiness- back with the wt. I have read that the merina has some progesterone released in it over the years and progesterone can decrease carb cravings- but my chiro said to much progesterone can cause increased growth of facial hair I did not Experience thisI did not Along with many other side effects ( I can't remember what they are- sorry) I am getting the Merina re- inserted asap. I really did feel level head with no fluctuation in mood swings. Although I am not looking forward to the initial insertion- it was only uncomfortable breifly.with alittle cramping the day of ( Aleve and some rest took care of that)

thank god it's not just me experiencing problems with Minera coil. I have fibroids and the minera was suggested. Had it fitted in April and bled on and off no stop. Went on holiday and took tablets to pospone my period, but ended up taking all of the tablets just to stop the daily spotting, (only managed 4/5 days of not spotting during 2 wk holiday with help of tablets) now I'm on day 12 of my peroid. Its never ending!!!!! Has anyone else suffered like this. When is bleeding likely to stop??? thinking of having it removed. Only upside to this coil is that I am not flooding and loosing clots!!

I have the Mirena IUD and have had it for about a year and a half now with MANY MANY complications. I was considering having it removed and now that I have read these posts I am having it taken out as soon as possible. My question though is has anyone else had an issuse with painfull intercourse? My husband has recently told me that since i had the thing put in it is uncomfortable for him because the string rubs and pokes him. For me it's VERY uncomfortable because just the right movement bumps it and I am in pain for hours. I would love to hear from anyone else that has had this problem...to atleast let me know we're not crazy.

I have had the copper coil fitted over a week ago, and I am still bleeding. I also get shooting pains in my lower abdomen occasionally, has anyone else had this?

I had the mirena coil fitted for exactly two years. Had irregular heavy bleeding for three months but it settled down and periods became light / to non existant. Fantastic, loved it as I cannot take any other hormonal contraception. My new partner and I want to try for a baby so had the coil removed last week. Having a horrendous heavy period. Hope I get pregnant soon and straight after the birth, as soon as possible, I will have the mirena coil re-inserted!! All I can say is give it some time to settle down before rushing to have it removed.

**update** I am 31yr old woman who was fitted for the copper IUD almost 6 weeks ago. The first month was awful-- lots of cramps and bloating, but after my first period all symptoms disappeared. (yes i checked and found the string.) I'm actually quite happy to have it now but be warned...the first month leading up to your period can be brutal.
Good luck ladies

hi, iv'e had the minera for about 13 months now and i love not having my periods but the things that i do hate is i'm always tired, very bloated feeling, i have alot of mood swings, iv'e gained weight, and also have acne almost all the time. also iv'e had to go for pap smear test every 6 months and have had 2 cone biopsys done because my pap smear results keep comming back with low grade results, which means spots that could eventually turn into cancer, i'm not sure if this has anything to do with the iud but if anyone else has had this problem please post it so i know i'm not the only one. reading this i can see many of you have the same problems and like many of you my doctor tells me it has nothing to do with the iud. i already have 3 kids and don't think i want anymore and my doctor won't tie my tubes because he says i'm to young but i'm seriously considering taking it out.

Ladies....I'm not here to hate but here is my story... I have had my Merina IUD for 3 years now and Loved it. It was great, I had no period and no cramping. Well about 2 months ago I started experiencing complications, which I beleive are from the Merina. First sweating really bad, like everday my armpits are soaked...then weight gain...alot....I'm normaly 128 and I'm at 145 and climbing, and Iwork out and eat right just can't shake the weight. Also I noticed I had a mustach. Also black hairs growing from my chin and neck!!!! What the heck??? Then I've been getting really bad headaches, back aches, also morning sickness, bloated, retaining water. The weight gain has been for a couple months and I thought I was going crazy, my doc said there's nothing wrong with you and even my friends tried telling me that Iwas just getting older.......I'm 26 come on!!!! NOw that I have gained 15 pounds my doc is concerned and has no Idea what is wrong with me. She has ran every blood test under the sun too. Well I got on here and did some research and guess what........my IUD is coming out today. Thanks girls........I thought I was just a basket case.......Sorry to be hatin on Merina but she's not for me

I had my first copper IUD inserted about 2-3 weeks ago. I have never been pregnant and am 31 years old. The fitting was more painful than I could have ever imagined, but it was brief. I will (for sure) ask for numbing medication when I take it out. There was moderate-severe cramping for the next 2 days accompanied by a slight fever. I have never had regular periods and rarely get PMS or cramps. The last few days I've suffered the WORST cramps Ive ever felt. I couldn't barely stand up as it felt like someone was holding onto my ovaries and SQUEEZING them. I have also had intermittant exhaustion and fatigue. Have also noticed a very weird sort of cloudy gel-like discharge (no odor etc.) I have been on more than 15 different hormonal bcs and refuse to put them in my body ever again. I am sincerely hoping this is just my body getting used to the device.

hi just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, about a month ago had bad u.t.i with lots of pain had 4 lots of antibiotics and has got better but still having some discomfort so went to docs to get mirena checked as pain felt very 'coily' she couldnt find the strings so now am having to wait for an ultrasoun scan to find strings! and am obviously very worried any else had the same?

I've had the Merina IUD for almost a year, and since then I have not had a period, which is a great thing. But I have gained tons of weight I get cramps really bad. I get bachaches and sometimes its hard for me to stand up really fast because my bach hurts so bad. I'm tired all the time, and even caffeine doesn't affect me anymore. I can fall asleep at any given time, or any given place if I allow myself to do so. I don't really know if I would recommend the IUD, I just thought it was me, but now since I read all these comments, it seems to the IUD. Also, just in the last 3-4 months I have gotten really bad acne. I never had it before, another side affect that isn't pleasant.

I've had the mirena fitted on 24/5/06 and although it was slightly uncomfortalbe having it fitted i was pleased until 4 days later then i bled for 12 days i'm beginning to wonder if it was worth having it fitted i feel irratable and drained. I have little option with any other method due to mood swings and loss of sex drive. Hi, I just wanted to say I am amazed at all of these comments about the mirena. I have PMDD and cannot tolerate any kind of hormone treatment. I tried the Mirena and ended up on prozac which I have been on for 5 years. I have just had the copper IUD (yesterday), don't know if it was a good choice after reading this but thought it was worth a try. What amazes me is that when I said to the consultant about my mood problems with the mirena he said this was an UNREPORTED issue and that it shouldn't happen - amazing given the amount of you out there who have had the same reaction as me. WHY IS OUR PROBLEM NOT REPORTED? If you are sensitive to hormones / suffer mood related PMS / PMDD, the mirena is probably NOT for you. Being long term prozac user is not fun at all, believe me.

I've had the Mirena fitted for 2 years now. Relieved not to have terrible heavy bleeding but have had irregular bleeding and as time is going on my periods have got longer. I have also had terrible mood problems and have a job not to be constantly miserable. Feel hormonal most of time. I'm having mine out soon.

I had my copper IUD put on about a week ago and i am going to remove it on my first follow up appointment. I am bleeding since i got IUD put on and i am having a horrible cramps and horrible back aches. i also feel very bloated and i feel extremely tired. My doctor made sound like IUD will be a great option to go, but this is so horrible and i hate this more than anything. i am kind of scare about the fact that i am still bleeding. i already called my doctor today to see if i can come in earlier to have him remove this device from me. I don't recomend this IUD for anyone.

I've had my my merina since Oct.'02 after my second baby. insertion went great, just light cramping for a couple hours. I love the fact that i have no more periods only spotting every 3 months or so.I have'nt ever had a problem with my weight before 'but i can't get rid of these extra 16 pounds for nothing.my face stays broke out, my hair has thinned out alot, and i stay very tired all the time. i've read up on some concerns that this is coming from the iud. i would like to hear from you if you have the same comments or concerns.i just want to feel like myself again.

I get my copper iud removed tom. I have had it for a few years now and loved it. When I had it put in I had normal cramping. No excessive bleeding. My husband has complained a few times about discomfort during intercourse, but other than that been great . Would do it again. We just want to try for another child. Does anyone know for sure if it has to be that time of the month for removal? The docs haven't said anything about that.

I have had the iud since feb of 04, i got the depo shot after my daughter was born.a week before the depo shot was to be done I had the iud inserted.since then i have not had a period but i still get the cramping, fatigue, cranky, you know what all comes with it but no bleeding.should I be concerned about this? I have had the iud before and i did have a little bleeding for 2 days then it would stop. I like it. My husband says if we do it the right way he can feel the strings.

i had a mirena fitted 3 yrs ago it went in no problems, a bit crampy that afternoon but nothing major, just had it removed ( no pain coming out either) as we want to try for a (baby no 3). I feel like i have said good bye to a trusty friend!! i have had no periods for almost 3 yrs just the odd spot here and there,i love it and as soon baby 3 is here ill have one put straight back in. I guess its an individual thing the coil, i would say give it a try!!!!!!!!

I had my IUD put in and removed and it felt no different from having a regular exam. Fear of pain should not be a reason to not get an IUD if that is what you want - it's great for people that have a body that can handle it. QUESTION: Did anyone have an IUD removed and have pregnancy symptoms like sore breasts? HELP!!
Guest 2006-05-17 14:55:03
CAN I have a merina fitted? I've never had a baby. Am 34 yr old smoker, therefore I can't take the pill.
Guest 2006-05-07 03:59:09
Don't know anything about the copper IUD but I have the merina IUD. I feel tired and have bodyaches and especially lower backaches. I feel cramping alot even when I am not bleeding. My husband also complains that he feels something poking him when we have sex. I am moody and very irritable. I am trying to figure out if the pros outweigh the cons. I didn't know anything about scar tissue causing one to not conceive either. Doctors and especially the manufacturers don't say anything about some side effects I am hearing about. I would advise anyone else to get as many facts as possible before deciding to use this form of birth control.
Guest 2006-05-06 18:58:01
Can anyone tell more about the scar tissue and other symptoms? I've had the merina iud 5 months and think I want to have it removed. I have terrible body and backaches, headaches and feel tired all the time. Not to mention the moodiness and irritability. Bleeding has not been much of a problem since the first few weeks after I had it put in but I am sick of feeling so bad all the time. Can anyone one else say the same? Or is it just me?

I had a copper IUD fitted 3 weeks ago and it barely hurt, just uncomfortable really. My friend had told me she's passed out! My first period hurt a bit but I had come off the pill so it was my first proper period in ages. Anyhow, I have tried to find the strings today and I can't. I believe sometimes you can't feel them depending on where u r in your cycle, i'm mid cycle now. Can anyone put my mind at ease.?As for side effects, I've lost 5 lbs since!

i have had the merina since sept. 05 at first i blead lightly then i had no period at all after 3 month i had a period then 6 months later i have spotted a few times (after not having a period) now i am experiencing pregnancy like symptoms? i have taken several tests but all neg. my husband wants another baby but im not sure if i am ready yet (after 2 already) should i go to the doc. to see if i am preg.? i am a little worried. and i also wanted to add i have had a little weight gain (and lost it) and acne after not having it before my iud but i have controlled it by using aprocot scrub (medicated) other than that i have no complaints about my iud i never knew about the scar tissue so if i am preg. i should be thankful considering my husband wants another baby anyway huh? i am 21 and i wanted to wait a few more years before having another. my children are 3 & 4 and we have been married for going on 6 yrs (married young) my husband is the only partner i have had (and plan on having) should i wait for a 3rd child? dont get me wrong if i am preg. i would be happy i just wanted to wait a while now im considering having it taken out so we can have another child in the future

I've had the mirena iud for about 1 yr period stopped after 3 days and the side effects that I have had are acne that I have never had before and slight weight gain. Doctor insists that unlikely due to the IUD. Had copper on prev. no problem for 2 yrs then began long periods about 12 days .
Guest 2006-04-08 00:09:11
i currently have the implant but it has caused acne, my GP has recomended the copper coil. Has anyone suffered from acne due to hormone contraception and tried the copper coil? has it cleared your acne.
Guest 2006-04-02 18:22:32
Dont believe it when it says it is painless!! I got my IUD 4 days ago and I am still so crampy that I can barely get out of bed... and I cried like a baby when she put it in!!!!
Guest 2006-03-30 21:13:39
I had a copper coil for 2 years after my first child was born, then went on to have it removed and concieve a second child without a problem (needed some fertility drugs due to a thyroid issue unrelated to the IUD) Now I have had Minera for about a week. Find I am a little hormonal, hot flashes, and such, however I am anticipating that will slow down. Good luck ladies.

hi,to the lady who gets vile migraines around the time of her period.i have had 2 non hormonal coils over the years and have always had migraines at my period.dont think it to do with coil just our bad luck.

hi im on my 3rd year of now with the hormone coil , i have not experienced any problems until now,for the last week or so i have had very sore breasts like when your pregnant, but dont think i am as i have no other symptoms, has any body else had this problem oh i am also 40 this year, could it just be my hormones?

Hi, I've had the copper IUD since Dec 2005. Since I've had it my periods have been slightly heavier and I get the occassional crampy feeling, but this far out weighs the constant worry about getting pregnant and also the the interuption of using a condom. No method of contraception is ever going to be side effect free but the knowledge of not having any weight gain, acne, lack of sex drive and a 98% chance of not getting pregnant was enough to persuade me. It was painful when it was inserted and I also had a constant dull ache for a about 2 weeks, but so far, I have had a good experience with it. My sex life has improved because I am able to have spontaneous sex and relax. I hope my experience will help anyone who is considering getting one.

Hi, I have had mirena for 4 years now, mostly no problems, but have had recurring thrush many times over last 2 years, also had this problem when on oral contraceptive pill, doctors say not connected to pill or coil. Sometimes only clear of thrush 1 week then it comes back again, then next time I can be clear for 2 months or more.
Guest 2006-03-20 23:16:52
I had the Mirena fitted in june 2004, haven't stopped bleeding since, at first they told me it is normal for 6 months then at 6 months they told me anything up to a year and then at a year told me anything up to 2 years. I am about to book the 2 year check and am going to ask for it to be removed. Problems are worse than pre insertion and I have put on so much weight(may be coincidental). It seems that the doctors perhaps get a bonus for 'persuading' women to have the Mirena. Please think twice about having one inserted especially if you are still young enough to want to conceive at some stage.

Hi
I have had the non-hormonal IUD in (can't take anything hormonal) for 2 years 3 months. Recently (past 3 months) I have had vaginitis, 2 lots of Thrush and 3 lots of Cystitis ( I have woken up this morning and suspect that the thrush has returned after having it 3 weeks ago). Has anyone else suffered from reoccurring infections. The Dr said it ISN'T poor hygiene but bad luck, but I am wondering if it might be my IUD. Any one else suffred this?

I have 5 children, I have had the Mirena put in in between them. No problems getting pregnant! I just had my third Mirena taken out so we could try for number 6 child. I hope it will be as easy as the previous ones to conceive. Highly recommend the Mirena. I bled for about three months after it was inserted but not heavy. Then the bleeding went away and I would lightly spot during my period. It was great!!

I am supposed to have the Merina inserted on Monday and leave to go on vacation with my honey on Wednesday...I do not want to do it Monday if I am going to bleed the whole time we're on vacation...this is our first vacation w/no kids in 3 years! Did anyone else have bleeding (I can deal with some spotting & cramping) in the days afterwards, so much that you wouldn't want to have sex? I have been looking forward to a relaxing vacation, being intimate and spontaneous...anyone have any advice on this??
